Various Round Penetrating Clothing

So I had an old jacket, sweatshirt, and T-shirt and figured I would take them to the range to see how the various rounds that I have penetrate. The jacket was an old medium weight ski parka, a medium weight sweatshirt, and normal T-shirt.

I figured that those 3 layers would accurately simulate what someone might be wearing in the winter here in New England.

All shots were taken from 7 yds to approximate the max distance inside my house. Here is how things looked prior to any shots:



First two shots using Federal Cartridge 38 Special Premium Low Recoil Hydra-Shok 110gr JHP:



And out the back:



Next up were two shots of 180 Gr JHP WWB through my XD.40 Service Model:





Next was two shots of #3 Buck through a 20 ga. Remington 1100:

Last was two shots of Remington #6 Game loads through the 870:





Pretty much everything that hit the front of the jacket came out the back. That equates to 6 layers (counting the multi layer jacket as one layer). The bird shot loads rocked the target backwards, likely from the number of pellets hitting the jacket.

Granted that the human body is denser than the clothing, so I do not think that most of these loads would have come out the backside of a human target.

I feel very confident that the HydraShoks the wife uses in her SP101, the loads I have for the XD, and the #3 Buck and 00 Buck would do the job without too much trouble.

Cool idea, the only thing better would have been to make up some ballistic gelatin in the shape of a torso and see how far the different rounds actually penetrated. It would also be interesting to use different material jackets, Nylon, Jean, Leather, Canvas...etc. Liked seeing the different rounds from the .38 to the 00 buck. Thanks for the writeup.

is there a cheap easy way to make ballistics jello? i mean some kind of home recipe? i would be interested in playing around with this type of experiment also.
