What if I baptized my carry rounds?

On a recent hunting and fishing trip, I got a little too eager in the fishing and wound up "up close and personal" with a mudfish in about seven feet of water.

After swimming/climbing out, I have a question: what can I do with the rounds that were in my magazine at the time?

These are civie rounds, so not sealed for water. I have replaced them with fresh, dry ammo. Now what do I do with the originals?

Is it safe to attempt firing them at the range? Or should they go into the dud can untried?

BTW, it was a good five hours between the incident and getting home. Then I cleaned the pistol, opened and CLP'd the mag. In just that short period, I noticed clear evidence of rust starting on the recoil spring. Everything else is polymer or stainless, but the springs are apparently quite susceptible to rust.

So back to the Q: if I assume wet powder inside factory ammo, what should I do with those rounds?

Take them your range and shoot them. If they don't go bang, put them in the dud bucket. Remember if it doesn't go bang keep the gun pointed downrange for 30 seconds then eject the cartridge. That way if you have a slow burner it doesn't go off when you are ejecting it.

Scott's got a good answer. No reason not to try them. In my experience, most ammo will do fine with a short dunking.

Ditto. Shoot 'em at the range. They'll still go bang more likely than not.

Then they should be good for anything from where-wolves to vampires? No need in the added expense of those 'silver-tips' IMO!

    Bad ammo

We did a test at the gunshop with a bunch of different range and defense ammo. We soaked it in everything from salt water to Hoppes #9 and the vast majority of centerfires fired after more than a month of soaking. As for me, I'd take it out of use for defense, but I'd use it as a training opportunity and fire it up at the range. If, for a hypothetical example I washed my spare P32 magazine thats what I do, or would do, if I did. They fire fine even after a trip through the washer.

Thanks to all. That's good news. I did replace them for carry, but feel better shooting about at least getting some range time with them.

Guys, I live on Lake Barkley in Western Ky. and spend a LOT of time on the water and in all kinds of weather. For that reason I seal all my carry ammo with a sealant I got from Midway a few years ago. It didnt cost much and provides one less thing to worry about.

    Nail Polish

Clear nail polish will work. Don't use too much, it can make a bulid up on the bolt.
