How Do You Guys Find Out What Your Local LEO's Carry?

I've seen many, many posts where quit a few people say they choose the SD ammo based on what the local LEO's use. I was wondering how you do that, just walk into the Sheriff's office and ask or what? I'd personally feel kinda odd doing this. Maybe they'd think I was interested in SD and just wanted to be safest all the way around, like most here on this site. Or would I be looked at like a moron looking to shoot someone and trying to add another check in my favor to cover my rear end. Just looking at a tactile way to find out what the good guys here are packing without looking like Rambo on retreat. Any info is welcomed.

..ex-wife is a cop. But I don't worry to much about what LEO's carry, I use quality factory ammo that works in my pistol.

I'd just call the agency, ask to speak to their firearms instructor, and ask HIM.

....because at least half of the cops probably have no idea what ammo they carry every day, beyond caliber.

True story: My agency now issues new duty ammunition immediately AFTER qualification. This is because one day, long ago, one officer happily punched holes in paper with JHPs, then loaded up for duty with FMJs.

    Cops aren't necessarily gun guys.

    I agree with Sergeant Mac.

I couldn't tell you what my "Duty Load" is. I just know I don't have to pay for it.

I can however tell you exactly what I put in my off duty guns.

I'm friends with a couple of our local cops (one was my next door neighbor for a while) and every now and again the 'gun talk' leads to "what you got", or something of that nature. Been to the range with a few and that was where all things 'gun' came out.

you need to carry ,whats best for you.most of the time LEO ammo is designed for conditions different than home defense or CCW requirements.cop ammo needs to be able to penetrate car glass or doors and still be able to stop a BG,normal CCW ammo shouldn't have to worry about such things.brand name hi $$ ammo fills the bill.heck, low $$ target ammo will work. jwr

Who cares what they carry? I don't find most officers I have talked to to be experts on guns, shooting, or ammo. I purchase a good brand name self-defense ammo.

    clarification

The explanation for why I try to carry Gold Dot is not because LEOs are firearms experts or gun experts or any sort of super-authority on ammo.
    Firstly it's excellent quality ammunition.
It is because carrying the same ammunition that has been officially approved for use by local law enforcement helps to take away some potential legal hassles that could possibly work to my detriment following some future self~defense scenario.

Since I see a lot of different pistols carried by the locals, I just ask.

This whole "carry the same ammo the cops carry" idea originated with Massad Ayoob.

It's been repeated so many times it's become "gospel".

I don't buy it, but to each his own.

I know what they carry I will not carry it myself, carrying what they do does nothing more for you in a SD situation or in court. Shoot what works best they shoot what they are given you have a choice.

As Supervising Firearms Instructor for my agency I would welcome a call or a drop in to talk guns/ammo. I recommend Gold Dots because we have had great performance from them, but I don't stick with the carry what LEO's do gospel. There are a lot of good rounds on the market and like a handgun purchase, your SD ammo is a highly individual decision for your comfort level.
