    Washed Rounds

Has anyone washed their bullets before?

I inadvertently left a speed strip of gold dots in my jeans pocket and they went through the wash yesterday. We put them outside to dry and are curious to see if they still operate.

This may be a silly question; regardless I would like to know if others have experienced this before.

Yup... if you carry extra ammo, this will happen at some point. The will work just fine, although I would rotate them out and shoot the washed ones at the range just in case.

I don’t plan on carrying them for self defense anymore.

Those little things are too pricey for such silly mistakes.

Thanks for the positive comment. It’s nice to know it isn’t just me.

He who has never had rounds washed does not carry enough ammo

I hear that if you add some fabric softner you can expect "softer" recoil.....YMMV

I keep a coffee can next to the washer for collection purposes.

I think this can fit nicely in our ammo and ballistics sub forum.

    Ammo

I have tested ammo soaked in water, salt water, WD40, and Hoppes #9 and the vast majority of centerfires still fired, some after more than a month submerged in WD40. No premium JHP failed in any test. Some of the rimfire even worked, too. I've found the worst thing is to wash and dry ammo, I've had some hollow points deform from bashing around in the dryer in speed strips. I think the odds are that it will fire fine, but for piece of mind, throw it into the training pile.

I wouldn't even put them in the gun at the range, I'd dispose of them. If you try shooting it at a range, and click, nothing happens! You just created a dangerous situtation at the range where someone could potentally get hurt while you try to deal with a dud round.
