    230 gr. +P Choices

Decided on +P for my 5" 1911 (with heavier springs on order) and trying to decide on a few choices. I think I'll definitely go with Double Tap flat noses and maybe some Buffalo Bore. Black Hills is also in the running. Any insight into those before I take the leap (and also hollow points vs. flat nose)? I went with non +P hollow points in my 9mm, .40 and .357 Mag with HST's, Gold Dots and 158 gr. Black Hills respectively and very pleased with all 3.
    Thanks.

I don't think +P loads are usually necessary in a .45 ACP - that being said my 1911 5" is loaded with 230 +P HSTs. Reason being they are easier to find and cheaper to buy in +P than otherwise - or at least they were when I was stocking up. Looks at Streichers.com if you want to add them to your list. I would stick with a hollowpoint bullet - they still penetrate well, and make a bigger hole. JMO

I accidentally picked up a box of Hornady TAP in +P at one point, got it home and figured, why not try it...I'm not sure my hand will forgive me. I'm just not a fan, and my standard loads make a hole with similar results, have less recoil, and are easier on my and my gun...just my opinion.

Many of us running short barrel Ultra's and compacts prefer the +P for SD. Gives us the power of the big boys in our little toys.

I favor Black Hills +P hollow points

My carry ammo is Hornady 230 TAP +P
Like someone else said, they have a sharp recoil, but I shoot accurate with them and have a lot sitting around.

If the bullet will expand at the velocities your gun produces why go to a +p? I get expansion out of a 3" .45 with the standard velocity Tarus rounds loaded with the 185gr DPX. There is also a "short barrel" standard velocity .45 ACP loading from Cor Bon(I believe) with a 165gr DPX.

Well sure, but this thread was about 230 gr. +P ammo. Was it not?

Yep, sure was, and my post reffered to it as being uneeded if he can get expansion from something a bit less harmful to his firearm.

I carry Hornady Tap in 230g +p. It's locally available and works flawlessly in my sidearms. I've also shot Double Tap ammo, and while I like it, I'd have to mail order it.

After much deliberation went with 230 gr. non +P Black Hills hp's and HST.
