Who's Happy With Standard Pressure 45 ACP?

I'm thinking a 45 doesn't really need to be +P. I don't like the extra recoil and I'm not convinced that +P ammunition in this caliber makes that much difference.

Interested in hearing from others on the subject, pro and con.

I have shot some 45+P loads, but not many. I don't seek to purchase +P loadings in this caliber. I'm quite happy with the regular defensive loadings available and depend on them. Most generally the Golden Saber. For 9mm however--I seem to have several different PD loads rated +P with the Speer 124gr Gold Dot topping the list.

If that added recoil causes your accuracy to suffer (and that's thing you have to discover for yourself) then it's not worth it.

If you're just as sharp with the +P's, then the ballistics say faster is better.

I sort of go back and forth on it in both .45 and 9mm. With the improvements in metallurgy and the design of hollow points I don't know how much is really to be gained with the added velocity. On the other hand these are only handgun cartridges so they need as much help as they can get! Right now I carry +P, but I wouldn't feel out gunned if all I could find was some high quality standard pressure load.

Don't feel the need to beat up my alloy frame Commander with +P loads.

I carry Winchester 230 SXTs or Speer 230 Gold Dots, whichever my local emporiums have in stock. Both shoot to the same P.O.A. in my pistol.

Well, just a friendly FYI that even the alloy framed Colts can handle +P but, you should change to a fresh recoil spring more often.

The standard .45 acp cartridge can only get SO +P because it does not have a super strong case wall.
Soooo...as "+PLUS+" as the .45acp cartridge can get - it is still well within the limits what the pistol can physically handle.

You would start rupturing case walls upon extraction before you ever got to the point where you were over-stressing the frame - though a "worn out" and severely weakened recoil spring can cause some frame battering.

With a special extra heavy recoil spring the inherently strong steel frame Colt .45 auto can handle the .45 Super cartridge without causing any problem at all to the frame or slide.

Using the super tough Detonics Magnum cartridge cases the Colt .45 pistol has pushed 185 Gr at up to 1400 FPS and the 230 Gr at up to 1200 FPS - using a special dual 32# recoil spring.

How do the ballistics compare for the 230 and 230+P?

Agreed...It's been stopping bad guys for decades so what's to improve? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Have never used +P in 45acp. See no reason to.

I'm fine with it. I have some +P on hand that I use for testing purposes on new guns, but my philosophy is that without being able to reload my own, I want my carry rounds to be close to target rounds as far as velocity, and overall felt recoil is concerned.

In my PT-145 Taurus I run the 200+P Hornady's simply because of the shorter barrel and that the Hornady, even though is a +P load, is not a whole lot hotter than a standard load that I can see. Plus I really like the low flash and feeding characteristics of the Hornady stuff.

When I carried a .45ACP I was happy with 185 grain standard velocity rounds. Absolutely no recoil and dead on accurate for me.
