This thread could get long.

Selection of best ammunition for a defensive shotgun
I use 2 3/4" reduced recoil 00 buckshot in my 12 gauge home defense gun.
thanks..now i got something to read when at work
i use 2-3/4 12 ga. #4 buckshot 27- pellets
Reduced recoil OO buck is an excellent choice for home defense, although you will still need to aim it!
For bush carry, the Brennake Slug in 2 3/4" is a excellent choice for a smoothbore.
visit THIS SITE. to quote test results:
"In fact, tests have shown that even #4 Buckshot lacks the necessary penetration to reach the vital organs. Only 0 Buck, 00 Buck, and 000 Buck penetrate enough to reach the vital organs.
Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job."
I use 2 3/4 inch 00 buck in a 20 inch barreled home defense pump shotgun with some brennake slugs in the side saddle if BG makes it behind cover,i seen them slugs blow through both sides of a car not counting engine compartment,if you live in an apartment complex or an area where a slug once it exits your house can strike an innocent victim or penetrate another residence,do not use slugs,i saw a report where a neighbor shot at a possum and the slug hit a house going thru the wall and striking a bible in a closet. When i wasin my teens i shot an abandoned farmhouse in the front door with a slug and the slug went clear thru the house.

I use 2 3/4" 1 1/2 winchester super-X buckshot. My HD Shotty is a 1917 Parker SBS Dbl barrel 12 guage. IMHO 12 guage is probably the best guage out there for versatillity and is used by LEO, Military, and sportman the world over. But use what you've got. If you have a choice go for the 12.

Great chart...
I live in an apartment and am paranoid about the thin walls. I use the new Mossberg 500 Breacher shotgun and have it loaded with #12 shot to almost completely reduce wall penetration. I have 00 buckshot as backup once I'm composed and am more aware of exacty where my shot is going in an emergency intense situation. I really have to be careful; I have people above me, and to the side.
It is utterly illogical to believe that passing laws to reduce gun violence will be successful when those who are commiting the gun violence do not obey the law.
I have neighbors on both sides of me and across the street. My shotgun is loaded with 00 Buck. If I could find 1 Buck or 0 Buck for cheap I might use that, but this is fine as well. I'm not willing to trade penetration and effectiveness for the ability to shoot without aiming and not fear the consequences. That's just me though. FWIW my shotgun is a backup to my AR-15 for HD. Just my two cents...

Including the BG's clothes. You will probably give him a nasty bruise though.
Zach and Holly, buy a couple of watermelons go to the range and shoot one a 15yds with the #12 shot, then shoot the other one with #4 shot or buckshot or any shot size bigger than #6.
After do this you will understand why nearly everyone on this forum advises you to get rid of the #12 shot.
