    .357Sig vs. .40S&W

I am going this afternoon to get an HK P2000 that comes with both .357Sig and .40S&W barrells. I carry a .40 now, but was wondering which would be better for a defensive round. Is there too big a chance of over-penetration with the .357Sig? Also, since the barrell is the only part you change out, what difference in POI can I expect between the two? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Both penetrate and expand admirably, assuming quality ammunition designed to do so. One begins the process larger and heavier; one smaller and lighter, but faster.

You're in a position to feel good about your decision regardless of what turns out to be.

    That said...

"I carry a .40 now, but was wondering which would be better for a defensive round."

If pushed, the .40S&W, by a narrow margin.

"Is there too big a chance of over-penetration with the .357Sig?"

    No.

"Also, since the barrell is the only part you change out, what difference in POI can I expect between the two?"

Not much if any, from my admittedly narrow experience in barrel swapping the two.

Caliber Wars - AGAIN. Shoot them both for yourself and find out which one you shoot best. Shoot placement is more important than penetration power.

I have never shot the 357 Sig, but I carry a .40. I have done velocity and energy comparisons, and the .357 looks to be more powerful based on those numbers alone, but no where near as powerful as the original .357 Magnum. In fact, the only (standard) handgun caliber that comes close to matching the energy of the 357 Sig is the .45 +P.

But bear in mind that those numbers do not tell the whole story, they're just a good starting point. So please take this information with a grain of salt.

I know they both get plenty of penetration, but I don't want to get over penetration. BTW. Due to the difficulty in finding .357 Sig ammo, I will be sticking with the .40. I have plenty of it already and it is easy to find.

Personally, I prefer the .40S&W, but you can alway search the internet (Ammoman, MidwayUSA, CheaperThanDirt, ...) and find some larger grain (slower) rounds in the .357SIG.
