Picking up 642 need ammo suggestions

    Edit 442 not 642

I'm picking up a S&W 442 (hopefully it came in today) that I ordered and need some advice on what ammo to use. This is my first snubbie (I have a uspc 9mm and 1911 .45) and know the recoil could be a little punishing.

Need some advice on a light load to practice with and a hotter, carry load. Gun was purchased mainly for summer/pocket carry and also to mark the Heller vs DC ruling .

I use Speer Gold Dot. Everything I read says its great for short barrel guns.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum.

I'm guessing +P for carry and standard for practice? Any grain suggestions?

I'm looking for something VERY light to start with just so I can judge what recoil is like. I also plan on having this gun available to my wife during the winter, when I'll switch back to carrying the 9mm. I'm hoping to find something she can handle that won't scare her off.

My 442 is piped with Speer Gold Dot 135 grain. Can't go wrong with a round designed for the J frame.

The +P 158 grain semi-wadcutters stoke the Model 642 along with any and all .38 Special revolvers in the household here that are destined to be used for self defense. Currently have Winchester, Remington, and Buffalo Bore in inventory.

I have a couple of loads that I like in my 442.

They are, in no particular order, the Remington 125 Grain +P SJHP, the CorBon 110 Grain +P JHP and the Gold Dot 135 Grain +P JHP.

For me it just depends on what I have "handy".

Look objectively at the ballistics charts, +P in a .38 SPL does not add much except and recoil and maybe 30 ft-lbs. There are standard wad cutters such as 158 gr with more ft-lbs than +P with excess pressure.

Buffalo Bore 158 gr. +P LSWC-HP! It will get you 1,000 fps from a 1 7/8" snubby barrel, has a very well formed gaping hollowpoint with square shoulders and flat bottom of soft lead for reliable expansion, and is gas checked to prevent leading. Expensive, but worth it for carry purposes. I practice with handloaded 158 gr. hard cast and save the high dollar stuff for actual carry.

Double Tap Speer Gold Dots...366ft lbs. 125g at 1100 fps. Only thing close is the Glaser Powerball 100g at 1150fps for 294ft lbs. Magtech Guardian Gold are the only other 125grains to break 1000fps.

I bought some American Eagle from Federal

    AMMOMAN.COM d/b/a Discount Distributors

for $240 for 1000 rds. It’s gone up a little since then. It’s fairly light- it seems to me. Good for practice. It’s accurate, burns clean, and the FMJ makes cleaning the gun easy.

    Federal Premium: Ballistics Detail

I’m using the Speer Gold Dot for short barrels for carry as well. It’s not the absolute “hotest” round to be found. It’s just well balanced as far as bullet construction and performance from a snubbie.

Detail Page for Part # 23921

Get them from Streicher’s . 50 rounds for a little more than some other places charge for 20 rounds. Make sure you order the “135 gr.” stuff. That’ll assure that you get the “short barrel” rounds – (quicker opening hollow points).

Another vote for Speer Gold Dots

Get the 135 Grain +P designed for optimum performance with short barrels. If you want the lightest possible loads to practice with, get yourself some PPC loads. Look for 148 grain wadcutters. Just don't practice with them exclusively or you'll get a "surprise" if you ever have to fire the Speers in anger.
