Just the endless pursuit of perfection. (And a whole bunch of fun along the way). I think its great that we have so many options open to us and that we can have a forum like this to throw things back and forth plus the level of experience/knowledge here is just icing on the cake.
I'm pretty sure that it's all about doing as much damage as quickly as possible to put the BG down. Two in the TC, one in COC if you can with as nasty a round as you can find.

    Yes, it "do."

Fire some of the exotic stuff and some of the run of the mill stuff all in one session. You'll see dat it do matters.

Yes because (to paraphrase) "Bullets DO Things"

Your Defensive round has to , at a minimum - penetrate clothing
muscle and cartilage , expand to transfer it's energy. and retain enough velocity to reach vital organs.

Obviously there are minimum requirements , which is why Law
Enforcement and the Military do not carry .25 Lorcins .

Yes it matters, even more so as you go down in caliber. I have a walther pp in 32acp that I cary at times. Now should I go the hollow point route?? No, I wouldnt use a hollow point, hardball fits the bill. I want something that will penetrate given the small size caliber.
Now lets go up in caliber to say a 40 cal with a 4inch barrel. Would I use a hardball round?? Nope it would penetrate too much and I would run the risk of the bullet ending up in something it shouldnt be in.

    It do matters.

You can pick a bullet type that will underpenetrate, or one that will overpenetrate. You can pick something small, or something big. Something fast, or something slow. Heavy bullets or light bullets. All will have different effects on target - its up to you to decide what you want.

Absolutely bet your life on it.
    The questions are:
Will you regret it if you or one of your loved ones is injured maimed or killed because you used an ineffective ammo?
Will you regret injuring maiming or killing an innocent human being because you used the wrong ammo?

But remember, no matter what bullet you are using none of them are any good if you cant hit your target. Shot placement is going to maximize the effect of whatever bullet you are using at the time.
I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.

Though this is with a rifle and not a handgun, the videos I've linked below give a pretty dramatic demonstration of the difference in ammunition. The original post with these videos was on ksccw.com at this link. Here are the videos.

Wolf 7.62 x 39 123gr full metal jacket shooting a watermelon and 1 gallon water jug. (9 shots fired)

    Same rifle, same type targets, 7.62 x 39 123gr Hornady V-MAX. (1 shot fired)

Pretty visible difference in the performance between bullet types from the same firearm.

    Hoss
    Sig 239 SAS 40 S&W / Sig 239 9mm / Kahr PM-9 / Walther PPS .40 / Sig P-245 / Ruger LCP
    Beretta Tomcat / Walther PPK / BDA 380 / Taurus 85 / Kel-Tec PF-9 / Am. Derringer 357

I think it is a matter of perspective.
If you know for a fact that the first two rounds are going to penetrate the heart and the third is going to disrupt the brain, then no, it doesn't matter. The results will be the same as long as you use a cartridge that is capable of doing it.

Now if you are like most of us, and can't guarantee that in a combat situation every round is going to go precisely where we want it to, then yes the cartridge and bullet design become very very important.

All I would say is, I would hate to be limited to just one or two calibers. Can you imagine Obama saying restricting gun ownership to .380 is not in violation of the 2nd amendment according to the Heller Ruling?

Lets be thankful we have so many choices, and variants, of basically the same caliber. Much better than being restricted to just one.

By all means guys, freedoms of choice is great! At least from my British oint of view but like i said..center mass, center mass and head shot..those three shots alone, overlooking anything else..be it a 125gr 9mm or a 230gr 45. does it really makes a difference?

Speaking of penetration..what is less likely to go through a head? What is there to take into consideration? Grains or ammo type? Where can I find information on possibility of penetration on the different kind of ammo?
Is there anything better then a trip to the shooting range?
