interesting comment regarding the EFMJs... if it performs as advertised then it will be a great leap forward. no data on its actual emperical performance though.

So, we've learned that 9mm pistols (and .270 rifles, if you peruse hunting forums) can't seem to kill things like they should. Previously documented body counts excluded, of course.

I personally carry a .45 for EDC, but would be greatly displeased to be aerated by any of the modern contingent of 9 mm ammo.

Just as with rifles, shot placement is key. I owned (and sold) a 25 WSSM rifle that lost me a great deer d/t my shot placement. Why? Because I aimed at the shoulder/spine area, just as I was accustomed to with my .30-06, and the 25 didn't have the juice to deliver heavy damage in that area. I didn't like having to limit my shot placement so much, so I got rid of the rifle.

With a pistol, every one of us who's taken SD classes has heard that a pistol is a poor tool for killing versus a rifle, all else being equal. So as already stated, nobody with any sense is gonna shoot one and reholster; we will all likely empty the magazine before 'assessing' the situation, with nerves kicking in... First one to place shots in the vitals wins. Here's hoping I don't have to be quite as picky about what my .45 goes through on the way to said vitals...

That might be a reflection of the predominance of 9mm handguns nationwide.

My thinking about killing power vis-a-vis handguns is evolving. I read recently that Wild Bill Hickock killed 5 men in 2 years using an 1851 Cold Navy cap and ball revolver that launches an eighty gr. bullet at about 925 fps. Now, that's a ballistic dead ringer for a .380ACP and the 9mm out performs it by a considerable margin (+P load delivers a 115 gr. bullet at 1300 fps). So, its hard for me to argue the 9mm can't deliver the killing power when properly loaded. I like my big and heavy .45 ACP bullets that clip along at a liesurely 850 fps but I'd just as quickly grab a 9 to decide a serious social situation.
