I might even go so far as to believe that there are probably more .38 Special revolvers out there than .22 revolvers. Hell, I even have a few myself that havent been shot in 30 years.

I think that the fact that the 38 spl was more common 75-100 years ago and that also during that period the country as a whole was more acccepting of guns means that there are probably alot more 38 specials out there. 100 years ago hunting and shooting were much more common, almost a neccesity or at least socially acceptable to more people. If you had a shotgun, you might be more inclined to get a handgun to. Since the 38 was considered adequate for the police it was well recieved by the general public.
My own 38 special is a perfect example. It was purchased by my fiance's father for home protection. He bought the gun new, with 50 rounds of 158 gr LRN and put the gun and ammo in a closet. The gun was thankfully never required to perform, never shot, and probably never loaded. No one was ever instructed how to load or shoot the gun, or safely handle or unload the gun. The family lived in a very safe quiet neighborhood and never even thought about the gun for 20 years.
We found the gun when we were cleaning out his house after he passed away.
I bet there are tons of these guns in closets all over the country.
