Winchester 9mm Luger 147 GR JHP Hollow-Point

This is a discussion on Winchester 9mm Luger 147 GR JHP Hollow-Point within the Defensive Ammunition & Ballistics forums, part of the Defensive Carry Discussions category; I use the Winchester WB 230gr JHP in my Ruger P90. But that is over 1/2 ounce of projectile at around 900fps. It won't stop ...

I use the Winchester WB 230gr JHP in my Ruger P90. But that is over 1/2 ounce of projectile at around 900fps. It won't stop a charging rhino but it'll definitely get a BGs attention.

Guaranteed put down on first shot, go with an RPG. Otherwise, hit what you're trying to and spend time at the range. And I have 124 gr Speer Gold Dot in my KT PF9.

And I use WWB 95 gr FMJ in my KT P3AT. If I'm shooting a .380 round I figure penetration is my friend.

"My only question, to which I do not have the answer, is whether the 147 grain is a bit heavy for the TP9 barrel thus inadequate expansion?"

tests into wet pack from a g26 were this:

    Win.RA9T/Avg.Vel.901/High 918/Pen.13 1/2

Here's a picture of the recovered round from a g19 and the g26

Thank you! Wow! It looks like the expansion was more complete, as well as more uniform out of the G26.

Am I interpreting the picture appropriately, Brownie?

    From the g19:
    Win.RA9TA-Vel/Avg.1231/High 1254/Pen.12 1/4 in./ Rec.Diam.0.671

    From the g26
    Win.RA9TA/Vel.Avg.1226/High 1235/Pen.12 in./Rec.Diam.0.613

Here's the shots of the recovered bullets for the RA9TA's

The first photo was of the RA9T's, sorry about that.

Ranger RA9T 147 load=37 fps slower in the g26; penetration 1/8" less in the g26; .014 less in recovered diamter as compared to the G19

The average loss for all loads tested from the g26:
26.2 fps compared to the G19

The average penetration loss for all loads tested from the g26:
.625 inches compared to the G19

Best penetration in the g19 was:
    Win.RA9T 147/Vel.Avg.938/High 953/Pen.13 5/8 in./Rec. Diam.0.589

Best penetration in the g26 was:

    Win.RA9T 147/Avg.Vel.901/High 918/Pen.13 1/2 /Rec.Diam.0.575

As you can see, the loss of velocity and expansion between the g19 and g26 is not enough to worry about. Hope that helps

So I guess from your analysis we can conclude unequivocally that regardless of the firearm or the ammo brand or model, bullets do hurt when they hit. Heck, in a pinch even a 115 grain WWB FMJ might even kill. Who knew?

Seriously though, your insight and testing is useful and interesting. thanks for the breakdown.

    Exclamation 9mm SD Ammo

Why do we spend so much time discussing the same topic over and over. JHP is the way to go! (WWB is not SD ammo.)

The following is a list of self-defense ammo recommended for the 9mm:

Barnes XPB 115gr HP (35515) loaded by:
    Cor-Bon (DPX09115)

Winchester Partition Gold 124gr JHP (RA91P)
    Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
    Winchester Ranger-T 127gr JHP +P+ (RA9TA)
    Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP (RA9T)

    Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P (53617)
Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP (53619)

Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)

    Federal Tactical 124gr JHP (LE9T1)
    Federal Tactical 135gr JHP +P (LE9T5)
    Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)
