One Round
No wishing for caliber wars, but considering that such a high % of defensive shootings involve a low round count at a very close distance, if you could only fire one round, what would it be?
I understand the reasons for carrying a hi-cap pistol, a BUG, and twelve spare extended magazines, but the odds are you may only get one off...

it is hard to say which caliber is best to carry. each person will need to make up his mind on this matter. i know tv/movies will play a factory in this. tv/movies is where most get their basic gun concepts from.
on the job i have seen 22lr/25 acp size guns kill in one shot and 45acp/357 mag size guns that did not. saw a guy shot in the mouth with the 40 cal, weeks later he was able to talk in court.
but i do know that most gun fights are one to three round fired at very close range. point and shoot, point and shoot, point and shoot. double tap, double tap, double tap. run, call 911, run, call 911
over the years i have carried 22lr, 25acp, 380acp, 9mm, 38sp, 357mag, 40s&w, and 45acp. i have never felt under gun with any of them.
so for me the best caliber to carry is the caliber that i have with me when i need a gun.

With that said, and I agree, every round out there for defensive purposes is still compared to the "King of the Street".
None has bettered it's ability yet. Some have come close, and at times it has failed, as all rounds have. I think that there are dynamics that we can't measure in a gunfight. So pick a round that you can shoot and don't plan on less than all the ammo you have to stop the threat.
Watch "Ultimate Survivors" if you get the chance. Steve Chaney's shoot-out is chilling and deals with some things to consider. There are people out there that will not be stopped. The sad part is, there are more of them than most people think.

120mm, from safely inside my M1A2.
Everything else is questionable.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

But then you have to send in a BDA team to see if you got him!

Taking this in a serious note. If you only get to fire 1 round it would be the first round in whaterver gun You have available at the time. If you have time to pick and choose then you also have time to avoid having to use any. If for some reason you can't leave and you are really only going to get 1 shot, then it would be the most powerfull and most accurate gun you have available. Were I in a 1 shot situation and I could conjure any firearm and ammo I wanted I would go with a Barrett 99 in 45 BMG. However we don't live in a fantasy world so we are stuck with what we have at hand.
