    Rock Salt

I searched but I didn't find anything on this.

I have heard of people loading shotgun shells with rock salt. What is this for? Dogs? Also, what would the effective range of a 12 gauge "rock salt" round be?

In the old day it was for anything trespassing.

Couldn't tell you the range, as a kid the threat was usually enough.

You forgot that they use to add bacon fat to the salt to help hold it together further, man would that sting!!!

My dad used to tell me stories of shooting rats in the barn with rock salt. Got rid of the rats but didn't damage the barn.

I grew up in an area covered in orchards. You have to understand that the idea of using rock salt was to scare, not to wound.

Rock salt would not be a very good idea for SD/HD, but it works great if your goal is to keep the kids out of your apple trees without hurting them or the apples that you need to sell at market. For this purpose, range is not importaint, again the goal is to scare, not wound.

Times and laws have changed. Shooting to scare is no longer a good idea.

Indeed! Pointing a firearm, loaded or not, without sufficient justification, may well exceed the seriousness of a trespassing charge.

Moreover, what the H is meant by "effective range" of rock salt? Effective for what?

BTW, salt simply cannot be good for your barrel, either! Ask anyone who has to maintain a firearm in a coastal region.

You obviously don't watch "Supernatural" on the CW....rock salt is for scaring off ghosts and spirits. It won't kill them, just drive them away for a few moments--long enough to do something heroic to save the cute heroine.

On TV, it's range as a 12g is 5 foot.

Other than that, I can't help you.

    I agree.

I was not making comments on whether or not it was a good idea, I was just giving a little background on why the farmers used it when I was growing up.

Back in the day, it was basically for that punk kid who kept stealing your cabbages or whatnot. Hit him with that, and he'd be stinging and hurting for a while, but far from dead.

As has been mentioned, this probably would not be kosher in this day in age.

    Since its all been said

Its been covered as to why it was used back then and why it isn't used anymore but out of a 16 ga double SS left barrel mod choke right full choke it would print like 6 shot to 10-15 yards. After 25 only would get 5-10 pellets in a 2ftx4ft sheet of butcher paper.
