    .357 Sig

Ok, I'm saving for a Sig P229. I was set on .40, but now this nagging voice has crept in. I want a .357 Sig. Is the performance of this caliber worth the extra cost of ammo? How do you like your .357 Sig?

No doubt about it, the .357 Sig kicks butt! My load is Double Tap's 125gr JHP flying out of a 4" barrel at 1450fps with 584ft/lb. Now THAT'S a great combo! If you prefer a heavier bullet, they sell a 147gr JHP @ 1250fps & 510ft/lb.

Get either caliber, for 100 bucks or so you can pick up the other barrel. They are interchangeable. That being said, I just recently picked up a P229 .40 and an extra 357 barrel. I prefer the .357, lots of fun to shoot.

If I where to buy an extra barrel in either .40 or .357 Sig, it's my understanding the mags in the P229 can be used for both. Is this true? Would be nice after seeing the price on Sig magazines.

    Yes, it's true.

I have the Sig229 in .40cal and also have a .357 barrel. Works fine with either and the mags are the same.

I like shooting 357Sig out of my .40cal 229 with an aftermaket barrel, trying to set up the dies to reload, but haven't figured out the right crimp yet.

As long as there is a readily available supply of ammo, the 357Sig is a decent round. If you are going to shoot factory made stuff the price tag can go pretty high pretty quick.

The .357 Sig is an impressive round - I'd had my doubts until I shot one, but quickly became a convert. After I got one, I decided the time had come to start reloading again, because of the cost.

I got the Sig 229 with two barrels, but yet have to shoot the .357 Sig. Reading up on it, I keep hearing different opinions. One argument against the .357 Sig is that hollow point ammunition does not reliably expand due to the higher speeds and that you may be better off with a regular 9mm (or a .40).

In the end, I doubt the .357 Sig is worth the extra cost in particular as your ammo selection is limited. With .40 you get a wider range of manufacturers and better tested products.

Finally got my dies working right and made up some test ammo, sadly my local range is closed and I will have to wait to try them out. Getting the right OAL that fits the mag, chamber and allows the bullet to stay seated in the case can be annoying. Here is some sig porn for you.

I have had 229 and 239 with both barrels for years love them. Spend the money you won't regret it.

I like 357 Sig better over 40SW. P229 with both calibers is a great choice, but I still like to shoot 357 Sig. For CCW it is loud round but very effective. Vodek

My buddy with a 229 and both barrels prefers the .357sig, he says it's a more accurate round, (2.5" groups from 10 yds. instead of 4" groups from 10 yds. with the 40s&w.

BTW.... thanks for the Sig porn Colin!
