What's a good/cheap/reliable target round to use in a Walther P22?
For general use, I'd say whatever you can get in quantity right now is good. Most .22s are sensitive to ammo and will shoot better with one load over another similar load. I like the Remington Gold bullet bulk pack, but lately the Federal is a lot easier to find. I can get tons of CCI, but only in the 100 packs, which is more expensive. Have fun shooting a bunch of different loads to find out which your gun likes.
I dont shoot .22LR pistols but of the different ammo I have shot through my Ruger 10/22, the Federal Copper plated hollow point Value Pack has been the most reliable and most accurate.

The federal bulk box 550 count runs better in all my guns ,remington bulk ammo doesn't feed reliably in any of them

Unfortunately, unless Walther has improved things in recent year's models, there is no such thing as cheap ammo for the P22.
The manufacturer recommends MiniMags, but these are now quite expensive.
Mine is sensitive to ammo brand. It will not work with Federal. It sort of works with plain old Remington .22LR; some of the time.
If used as a plinking gun and you can tolerate some failuresand nuisance, I would start by trying the least expensive box of .22lr from Remington. If those don't work well enough for you, go up to the MiniMags--or if you want to spend the money, Stingers or equivalent.
Also, clean the gun real well before going out and lightly lube the rail with a light gun oil. The smoother the slide operates, the better.
I recently had problems even with MiniMags because for some reason they had too much wax on them and would not extract, but that was just this one batch of ammo.
A P22 working well is a fun gun. It is really a fun gun to shoot when you are using Stingers--but these are expensive.
When it acts up it is a piece of junk I feel like getting rid of.
My P22 likes the Federal 550 copper jacket HP's value pack from Walmart. That said, my P22 also likes being greased up. Oil is ok for storage but she likes to be all buttery at the range.
CCI Stingers are always a safe bet too but for cheap range time go with the Federals from WW.
Speaking of Fed. .22LR value packs, I completed a 6am ammo run at my local WM yesterday. They were $13.47ea.

The Federal bulk pack shoots fine through my Ruger 10/22, but my Sig Mosquito has more expensive taste, only CCI MiniMags or Stingers will do.

The P-22 I have had a lot of issues with ammo. The only one that will work right are CCI high velosity. I sent it back to Walther/S&W they replaced some internal parts. Shot it once since I got it back. It sits in the safe now in the dark.
