This kind of event is not uncommon at some of the PPC matches I have attended over the years. A large plastic bucket is used to carry gear, ammo, spent brass etc. The ammo is kept in speedfoams to make loading of speedloaders easier. When reloading the revolver the brass is dumped into the bucket. If the brass hits a primer just right...........:gah:
I had a bulk box of 525 rim fire .22's brake open so I put them in a zip lock bag. I tripped and dropped them down a flight of stairs. None went off, but what a mess. I'm still finding 22 round.
If the first round goes off it can set off a chain reaction - POP POP POP POPPOP POP POPPOP POP...... until the whole bag is gone.

years ago, as a volunteer fireman, we responded to a structure fire, that was fully engulfed. Downstairs in the basement was his gun room. All night the shells kept exploding, but just popping, nothing else.
You *may* have a problem with rimfire rounds, but only if you knock it right on the end, and with a good amount of force. Centerfire cartridges are pretty unlikely to go off like that.
And as has been mentioned, as long as you aren't right there by it, a round going off outside a chamber and barrel isn't too much of a threat. Even if you are by it, you'll probably get some bloody wounds from the shrapnel of the casing, but no where near the damage from a focused bullet.
There was a guy dropped a box of 45acp in a factory box in a Police Dept stairway on the way to the gun range and one shell went bang and he had a lot of enquiring minds around real quick.It is possible for a primer to get struck hard enough to cause a bang
My advice is, try really hard to NOT find out.

If something strong hits the primer, it will go off, however the way bullets work to gain momentum is to use the SMALL cylinder (barrel) to let all of the force be directed behind the bullet.. With all the force going out of the sides, the bullet will fly maybe 6 feet into the air, if that, with next to no force...

As a former FedEX Ground employee when I was in college, I can say that a drop from 10 feet wouldn't be unusual in a sort facility. I remember a belt getting backed up one day and seeing boxes fall 25' from the belt to a concrete floor. :gah:
