Wihout the "talons", it's just a Gold Dot copy. I don't see what would make it any better or worse than other bullets of similar technology. As for Guns and Ammo's praise, I'll bet it follows Winchester's advertising dollars being spent.
Of course, if you can get it in stock, it's better than everything else lately.
The pointy pieces of jacket that stick out of the expanded Ranger "T" series, the Platinum hunting rounds, or the original Black Talons are sometimes known as Talons.
There were two designers trying to improve terminal ballistics back in the day. Tom Burczynski was experimenting with different shaped punches and different shaped notches in copper jackets to make a bullet that would expand at any velocity but could be formed with a punch that would allow them to be mass produced. Hydra Shok, Starfire, and the Gold Dot were made with this technology. Dave Schluckebier working with Alan Corzine developed a bullet that used the jacket expanding larger than the lead core to cut as a method of wounding. The Black Talon was the original design but after some controversy, Schluckebier (Do you have to have an impossible to spell name to design good bullets?) left and went to Remington and developed the Gold Saber series. Same method of wounding, different way of accomplishing it.
The pic is a semi-expanded 9mm BT, you can see one of the Talons.
Please let us know how you all like the stuff or not. I will use CorBon DPX until convinced otherwise. Corbon DPX is a 100% copper bullet, therefore, you do not have to worry about a "jacket" fragging off.
Was at Gander Mountain tonight, and they had A LOT of this ammo in 9mm, 40, and 45. I bought a few boxes of 9mm 124gr +p just because. It looks like its the Ranger T, but bonded. $22 for 20 rounds of the 9mm. Not too bad I guess....especially since it's Gander...
I fired two boxes (have four left) of the 147 thru my Walther P99, P99c and my HK P7M8. The rounds fed like candy and were extremely accurate out to 25 yards. It was an indoor range so other than just looking at the target, I really could not get a feel for the expansion. I have them in all my 9mms now since the 147 HST supply has dried up. Personally I think it the Ranger T bullet with a bonded design.
Went to the range yesterday (tons of fun). Shot my G26. Burned through a bunch of rounds. WWB, Brazer Brass mostly. So I shot the practice ammo...very little kick like usual. Shot off a few Federal Hydra-Shok 147gr, a noticeable kickback difference. Then I shot off a few PDX1's...WOW!!! BOOM! Much more powerful kick than I expected. I love it!
Switched from Federals to PDX1's as my primary carry DA.
I use the 124g +p in my p250 9mm....they shoot flawlessly, and have some oomph behind them. I have not yet been able to find one in the dirt trap behind my target board, so I cant see the actual expansion of the bullet.
