Does anybody see a problem or issue with storing large amounts of loose handgun caliber ammuntion (primarily JHP's) in ammo cans? This would be assuming that due caution is used not to mix ammuntion types/calibers in the same can.

No. We store ammo for very long periods in ammo cans at the Rogers School and have had no problems.
No sweat.
I store my reloads this way
I recycle quart sized plastic sherbet contains from Publix. They are heavy duty and the perfect size. I can store about 400 rds of .380 ammo, 300 rds of 38 spc, 250 rds of 45 ACP. The top seems to seal it very well. You can either write a post-it w/ load data or use magic marker on the outside of container. I also, use them for sorting brass and picking up range brass. So, don't throw away those plastic container.......RECYCLE! :bier:
Thanks for the input, gentlepersons. I just find ammo cans to be secure way to store it with ease of tranportation (handles). Unfortunately, it seems that military ammo cans are getting harder to find. I may have to start looking at some of the commercially available plastic "ammo cans".
