The only ammo I feel I have sufficiently supplied is for the rifles and it is all either hunting ammo (soft point) or FMJ. I am currently trying to stock up on handgun ammo but as we all know, it's a bit hard to come across right now.

I have about 2X in FMJ as I do in JHP. Right now it's about 350 HST and 700 WWB in .40. For .380 I have about 200 Ranger T-Series and 400 WWB. I don't shoot nearly as frequently as I'd like to, so this will last me at least a couple of months. Every time I'm in WM I pick up 1-2 boxes if they have any. I'm not trying to clean them out, just keeping my mini-stash at a decent enough level to go shooting when I can and not worry about running out.
I primarily use FMJ for practice, but every trip to the range, I also put 1-2 mags of SD ammo through, that's why I like to have such a large percentage of the good stuff on hand.

I try to keep about 10% of my ammo in JHP. Of course at the range I shoot mostly FMJ but I will shoot a little JHP on occassion just to test in the guns. At times I have fired maybe just one magazine of JHP just to check. Its so expensive that I try not to do that very often. An exception is the .38 special, where I never shoot any JHP snce feeding the chamber is not an issue. As an example right now I have about 500 rounds of 9mm and about 50 of that is in JHP.

When it comes down to something else, like big time trouble, riots etc. Also very unlikely to happen, but always good to be prepared. IMO, if it comes down to me needing it, anything that launches a projectile from the barrel at a relatively high rate of speed is SD ammo. If I am faced with mobs of rioters or roving gangs (1 in a million chance there) I want plenty of ammo and don't care what it is as long as it works.
If you don't think FMJ will stop a bad guy, ask some dead Iraqis. Granted, it is not as effective for that purpose, but our military has been winning wars with FMJ only ammo for a long time. Hit the vitals. Shoot 'em more than once. It'll all get the job done. Millions of people died from gunshot wounds before they ever even came out with expanding hollowpoint bullets, much less the super duper hi-tech stuff the gun rags and manufacturers tell us we absolutly must have to stop a BG. Is it better, yes. Will the old FMJ stuff still do the job if you put it in the right spot, sure it will.
Sorry, but this is a sore subject with me. Not your fault. It's just like all of these people who are convinced that they have to have a "trophy bonded" bullet in a some kind of a Super Duper Short Magnum to kill a deer. Are they better, maybe, but dead is dead.
Ok, rant off. Again, nothing personal, just food for thought.
Nice rant.....and I agree with you. FMJ will get it done. I stockpile whatever I can find at a decent price in bulk, some HP, some FMJ.
Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!

Brevity is the sole of wit. See there Bart, you summed up what I had to say in one sentence and it took me half a page to do it.
I do keep more than one box of the good stuff around though. Several boxes.
