Has a lot to do with the firearm and the guy shooting, the police loads may be loaded "hotter"

Yep, they were fairly anemic compared to the hotter +P+ JHP of more recent times.

I would expect the targetmaster loads to be more accurate and the police loads to be more powerful.

two boxes of 158 gr Round nose bullets

hi , both loads according to published specs [ shooters bible ] are 870 fps from a 6 inch barrel , these were typical police loads at the time that departments issued, the only question why were the target master made and were they any more accurate ??? ??

Who knows why the target load was sold as such and whether they were truly more accurate than the other products in the company's .38 Special line? Perhaps the bullet was more uniform in some fashion. Perhaps certain production batches were saved and especially packaged because they tested to a lower standard deviation. It could have been only because the box was so labeled, even though the ammunition inside was actually identical.

two boxes of 158 gr Round nose bullets

hi bmcgilvray, my thought was possibile old style PPC were my matches were shot with service ammo , match being better ,before WW2 there was a very popular load , full range wad cutter , 158 gr wadcutter , not semi wad cutter, just a thouht I'd run by the boys on the forum , stay dry, rojo

Does the shooters bible give the standard deviation on each load? It could just be that the 870fps is the nominal for each load but the police load is +/- 15fps and the target is +/- 3fps. Or it could be the police load uses a powder with less muzzle flash.
