Speer Gold Dot vs Federal HST LE

I use Glock 26, and was wondering if anyone has experience, test results, problems, or recommendations for the 9mm Federal HST LE +P vs the 9mm Speer Gold DOt for short barrell.

In searching other forums, I hear some negatives about the Federal not retaining petals in test, particularly the 124 gr. Have not heard much bad about the Speer GD!

First I've heard about that. Fed HST is the only SD round I use. Unless of course it is just absolutly not available. That is not the case at this time.

My gunsmith and LEO guy recommended the SGD for short barrels for my M&P9c.

    That's what I use.

Those are both excellent choices....I use both and have good luck shooting both.

I carry the GD's because they seem to be more accurate out my G26. There is nothing wrong with the performance of HST's and I wouldn't hesitate to carry them if I didn't have GD's. I say carry the one that is most accurate.

Both are top of the line ammo choices. 1/4 inch difference in shot placement will make more difference than which bullet you use.

In ATK's tests (check website) I think the GD's (not SB) did better at autoglass penetration, but at the expense of expansion in the other tests - pick your poison.

this is bogus info. real world shooting data proves this incorrect. this FUD comes from some yahoo shooting gello on a bench and likely was not a valid test.

many tests conducted by ATK and the real world shootings proves this wrong.

The Speer GD, Federal HST and Winchester Ranger-T are all top performing bullets. All penetrate well. All expand well (as well as any JHP and better than most). The lab I wanted to link to is no longer accessible, but in a series of tests, the GD and Ranger-T were a little more consistent in their expansion. Any of these would serve you well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of these, in today's market. My personal preference is Ranger-T, GD, then Federal, but I usually end up with Speer GD, or Double Tap.

This is something I saved from someone elses test concerning HST +P.

A single round was fired from a Glock 19 and a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 into Gel. Both rounds were found to have lost mass due to fragmentation (lost petals). All bullets had retained gel under the copper jackets. The Glock 19 bullet captured 1 of the broken petal against the copper jacket and retained 2 of the six lead petals. The round from the Sub-2000 fired bullet retained zero petals. Notice how almost all the petals are missing from the 9mm 124 grain +P Federal Premium HST (P9HST3) bullets below.
