.44mag for SD, if you can do it. Basically Im of the mind to carry the biggest caliber I can carry all the time, and hit what Im shooting at.
Which ever is cheaper and easiest to get enough training at the range is what I would use at the range.
I know not what this "overkill" means.

Honing the knives, Cleaning the longguns, Stocking up ammo.

for practice use semi-wad cutter projectiles or Blazer ammo, it's cheap (unless you reload, then use whatever you want or have)

for conceal carry, anything other than the 44 mag, I have a 629 classic, plenty of fire power, but after a couple of hours, that is one very heavy gun. I generally only use the 44 for hunting.

I have a couple of loads that I use in the various calibers, except the 44's.

38 SPL: Gold Dot 135 Grain JHP (It's a snubbie)
357 MAG: Federal 125 Grain JHP (357B) or Remington 125 Grain SJHP (Remington available at WalMart)
    Black Hills 125 Grain JHP
44: No Idea, I don't use 44 for defensive purposes

I shoot my carry ammo for practice, so it's one load per gun for all purposes if it's a defensive gun. There are other good loads out there, it's just that I can get these easily and can afford to "stockpile" these.

    For .38/.357
At the range I use either whatever is cheapest at the store, (back in the days when you could buy such things at the store), or whatever I've reloaded. (either 158 lswc, or 125gr hp.)

For carry, in my .38 snubby either +p 135 gr Gold Dot SB, or Remington +p 158gr lswchp.

In my wife's .357 I load the Remington listed above, because she can't much handle a full house .357 SD load and have any hopes of getting off a quick second shot.

    I don't own a .44
