testing ammo expansion
I am looking to test my 9mm hollow points I have along with possibly 22 magnum pistol and 38 special to see the expansion.
How deep would the water need to be if shot in standing around 10feet above the water. I have a trough and trying to see if it will work and expand and stop and not go through the bottom of the trough.
do a search for "fackler box"
I have shot 380, 9 mm +p, 45 +p, 38's and 357 hollow points into a garbage can full of water standing on the second tier of a deck shooting down many times.
I don't know how far they penetrate into the water but I have Never had one puncture the garbage can and have been able to retrieve them all.
They hit the water violently and make a big splash but all end up in the bottom of the can.
I would not do this with anything but hollow points out a pistol however
ps...I do this at my cabin in the middle of nothing
They did this on a Mythbusters episode, shooting diagonally into a pool and measuring the amount of water through which the bullet traveled. They were investigating the mechanics of shooting something underwater. Anyway, the Discovery channel website might have information from the episode, and that could give you a guideline for water penetration of several pistol and rifle calibers.
Get on Mythbuster's video's on U-Tube,. I'm sure they have it on there...
