124+P vs 147 (9mm HST)
Comming out of a 9mm Springield XD sub compact 3" barrel which will have more penetration and best expansion?? Which one is perferred over the other and why?? I also seen the new 135+P bonded figure that would be the best of both worlds heavy and still good speed too bad they didnt make a HST in that load
Bear in mind, my opinion is influenced by twenty years of carrying a gun, and studying various shootings over that course of time.
I personally have no use for 147 grain anything in 9mm due to it's past record in the late eighties and early to mid nineties. The mid-weight loads, or even the lighter 115 grain loads loaded to +P or +P+ have a good track record with lots of documentation behind them.
I realize that the 147 grain load has been redesigned and this is just my own personal prejudice, but having met a LEO that was later killed due to an over-penatrative 147 grain round does tend to factor in to my dislike of the round.
There is no "magic bullet". You would be better served practicing to put the round where it will stop the threat IMHO. In my personal 9mm I carry either 115 grain +P or +P+. I favor the +P+. :hand10:
If I am worried about over penetration along with everyone else then no one would use buckshot for HD or even a 45 acp for SD wouldnt that over penetrate more than a 9mm.
How about the 124+P or 127+P+
Arent all the test done on the 9mm in 147 grain?? for the FBI?
45 and 9mm tend to penetrate about the same, using JHP's.

How it compares to the newer 147 grain loads, I have no idea and it's not really something I'm interested in finding out about.
I like, in order:
127 grain +P+
124 grain +P+
115 grain +P+ (current load)
124 grain +p
115 grain +P
124 grain (standard)
115 grain (standard)
I like the 127 GR. +P+. To each their own.
I would not worry about over penetration in a SD situation for a hand gun. Then again, I'm no expert.
Heck, I'm no expert.

All of my carry ammo has been 124 +P but I have been considering some 147 down the road if I can ever find some.
This is the equivalent of asking which dog you want to be attacked by:
175 pound Ridgeback that thinks you attacked it's owner
185 pound Doberman that thinks you attacked it's owner
165 pound Pitbull that thinks you attacked it's owner
Its not like you are going to survive either going after you in close quarters, so you might as well say "either"
All three are top quality loads. Absolutely top.
They are all FBI spec, law enforcement grade ammo.
Carry the one you can find and shoot enough of to insure reliability and accuracy.
If they all meet that criteria, stock up on and carry the least costly.
All of the tests I have seen show the 147gr expanding slightly bigger and penetrating on average another inch compared to the 124gr +P HST. That being said the 124gr +P outperforms almost every other 9mm round out there so you cant go wrong with either.
How about the 147+P see that penetrates and expands beest out of the 124+P and 147 stanard. Its a heavy bullet travels fast should penetrate far and expand fast as well
I like 147Gr!! in 9mm
Most tests pound for pound show 147gr. rounds penatrate better. The expantion was really good with the 147 GR.winchester silver tips.I did a wet phone book test.Back in 07.There still going around 1000 fps. with a non +p load, not bad!! I'll take the bigger round. As far as the 147gr. prone to jamming is bs.I ran hundreds out of my S&W 469 flawlessly. My family NEVER had a problem with 147's.My brother carrys with 147Gr. gold dots.Speed only gets it there faster!Penatration to vitals is #1! Id rather a little over penatration, than not enough.Bottom line!!
Yea so 147+P would be best for expansion and penetration then 147 then 124+P
Found a bunch of HST
A local gunshop here has about 100 boxes of 147 HST +P $24 for a box of 50.I picked up 200 rds for a G19,anybody use these in their g19 yet? Any issues?
It doesn't really matter.
We're better off with training than studying bullet weights.
