Pros & Cons for Lead Round Nose (Remington LRN 158g)

    Short and to the point..

Bought my wife a Ruger SP101 in .357. She will be shooting .38sp. I ran across some 158g Remington LRN. Some folks say that it is bad due to lead buildup. Some say shoot the hell out of it and keep the gun clean. All I want her to do is practice once or so a month with said ammo. Carry ammo will likely be 38XTP 38 Special 125 XTP Hollow Point.

So.. Input on lead for occasional practice please?

Thank you all for you help..

It's OK to practice with but I wouldn't want to carry it for self defense. Only trouble is, it is a 158 gr round, and your carry ammo is 125 gr XTP. The different wieghts will give different points of impact, so makae sure you know where your gun hits with each ammo. Lighter ammo is faster. This results in less "dwell time" in the barrel and as a result, lightwieght ammo hits lower. A heavier bullet being slower, is in the barrel a millisecond longer and therefore hits higher because of barrel rise durring recoil. Also, in 38 special, leading will not be a problem, at leaswt not for a few hundred rounds or more. Plain lead bullets in a 357 mag load is another matter.

Lead build up is a problem when you use LRN. Typically the higher the velocity the worse the build up. I tried loading up and using LRN in a 9mm S&W 659. Not only did it gum up the barrel, it caused feeding problems as the lead gets shaved off by the feed ramp. Granted you won't have that problem in a revolver, but count on spending a lot of time cleaning that bore and cylinder.

If your bullets are properly matched to the throat and groove measurements on your weapon, there shouldn't be any lead build up. If their is, white vinegar and H2O2.
