Is Winchester PDX1 replacing the Ranger Line?

The hollowpoint is a six-petaled gaping maw of an opening that promises lots of terminal ballistic performance, and its expansion does not disappoint. Adding reliable feeding to the round is a nickel-plated case or cases, as the PDX1 line is going to start out in six loads in four calibers.

Performance was everything you'd expect of a load the FBI is receiving as I write this: Full expansion, with the average of the first five round being .615-inch, and full FBI penetration, averaging 15 inches of gelatin. This is not ammo for the faint-of-heart. Launching a 180-grain bullet in the close vicinity of 1000 fps takes work, and your hand will realize that. But if it is performance you want, this ammo delivers.

So is this bullet a replacement for the Ranger line, or better? Anyone know?

I don't think they are replacing the Ranger line. Just another line of JHP for people to use.

I fired some in 9mm and they were very accurate
There was in fact a noticeable jump in accuracy from ball ammo.

No, I don't think they will replace the Ranger line. I have heard and I don't know how true it is but someome here I think mentioned that the PDX1 is their existing bonded Ranger renamed.

And isn't the PDX1 a renamed Gold Dot? What possible improvement can there be?

Nope. Winchester makes the PDX and Speer makes Gold Dot, unless you are implying the PDX is a copy cat bullet.

It's defintiely not a copycat; looking at the two side by side, they are quite different...

I think, though, that the PDX1 is a replacement for the SXT line.

I meant a copycat. The one expanded I saw even had the "gold dot" in the center of the expanded mushroom. I was hoping for sharp pointy talons like the Ranger in a bonded bullet. Of course, when you think about it that probably isn't easy to do with a bonded jacket.

Actually, my local Wal Mart had .45, .40, and 9mm on the shelf last time I was there. Like 10 boxes of each.

I found mine at Bass Pro Shops but I got lucky. Went back the next day and it was all gone. Cabela's has some in various calibers. I have started getting a lot of my ammo there.

According to Olin (Winchesterís parent company) the PDX1 and the Ranger Bonded is the same round. The difference is that the PDX1 is packaged in 20 round boxes for the consumer while the Ranger Bonded is packaged in 50 round boxes for LE.

There is currently no plan to discontinue the Ranger T, but I have no idea whether the STX will be phased out and replaced by the PDX1.

This is based on a phone call I had with them about two months ago.
