Question Under 21 and buying handgun ammo

I am not under 21, but I am curious to know if there is any federal law that states you can't buy hand gun ammo online if you are under 21. Everywhere I have purchased ammo online (cabelas, aim surplus, and a few others) have only wanted to know if I was 18. So does anyone know if it is illegal to purchase handgun ammo if you are under 21 off the internet?

Federal law prohibits the sale of handgun ammunition to anyone under 21. The means of purchase - over the counter or over the Internet - makes no difference.

Federal law in not just a 'technicality'...under 21?...pistol ammo is a 'no buy'.

I agree most online places like to get a copy of your DL, but not all of them.

Yea, Federal Law 21 or no handgun ammo. That used to be a problem for me, I had a lever action deer rifle I used for well, hunting DEER. It was a 44 mag and I needed to get my mom or dad or someone else or buy the ammo for me until I turned 21.... Problem with this? I BOUGHT THE RIFLE!

I'm actually a little hazy on the ammo laws in arizona. I'm 20 so I obviously can't by from a licensed dealer but I've had no problem buying from gun shows.. I'm not sure if it's legal or not. I know that handguns here are over 18 but under 21 for private transaction but I'm not sure about the ammo.

And then there's the gun range.. sometimes I have to have whoever's with me purchase the ammo.. other times they tell me I can purchase it as long as I use it all in the range. Not sure if that's legal either...?

example of how stupid this is... my kids have a friend who enlisted after HS with the USMC and is serving overseas in combat for his country, when he comes home he cannot buy ammo legally until this July after ~4 yrs of active service

Federal law is what applies - states can be more restrictive, e.g., California and New Jersey, but AZ is not. 21 and over for handgun ammo remains the rule.

If you buy ammo at a store, you have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo. If you buy from a dealer at a gun show, same applies. Private sales are a gray area. A commercial range is probably taking a chance selling you pistol ammo, since they're taking your word for it that you'll burn it all up before you leave, but practically speaking, that's low risk.

Many rifles are chambered to shoot "pistol" ammo.

    I own a .22 pistol as well as a .22 rifle.

It was very common in the West to have a pistol and rifle chambered for the same round. These are current popular cowboy rounds: 45 Colt, 357 Mag./38 Spl. and 44 Mag./44 Spl

A number of carbines are currently available in 9mm and 40

I've been asked at the Wally World counter before if the .22 ammo was for a pistol. At the time it was for my rifle but who's to know otherwise? This law is about as worthwhile as an assault weapons ban.

AGREED. But alas, one more thing we can fight for, doubt it will ever change though...
