This is what I currently carry in my 2-1/2" 686+. Recoil in the 686 is quite manageable. Much will depend on the weight of your gun.

Recoil is not bad out of my 22oz Mod 60. Your 23oz 640 should be fine. Muzzle flash isn't too bad either.

Speer GDSB, Remington GS, Buffalo Bore 38+p all recoil about the same, which is to say sharp but controllable.

What is the depth of penetration of the Speer 135gr. 357 HP fired from the 2 1/2" barrel?

The Speer .357 SB load is relatively tame, with muzzle velocity rated at only 990 fps. Its recoil and flash are also much less than even the Remington Golden Saber 125 grain load (described by some experts as a mid-powered .357). While the bullet may expand well at that velocity, I do not know how that lower speed affects terminal performance.
