Being a snubby I like the 158gr. in .357, heavier slug, deeper penetration. Federal Hydra-shok is my carry round in my S&W M60.

I carry Fed Hydro-shocks 129 gr. +P in my SW 642. But I'm interested in trying out some Hornady Critical Defense (as soon as I can find some!), these are interesting.

S&W 442 w/ Corbon DPXs right now, though I'd also carry the 135 gr GDSB if that is what I had.

I have read everything I can find on .38 spl. ammo and snubbies.
For my Model 36 I've decided I like what I hear about the Federal Nyclad rounds, as far as penetration and expansion.
The Cor-bon DPX 110 gr, run a close second, although I do have a 50 round box of Super-Vel with the original $7.65 price tag.
Modern technology has improved ammo tremendously since the early 70's, I think I'll keep those as momento of days gone by

OMG, I've just confessed to being older than dirt

    I'm currently carrying Hornady Critical Defense 38spcl +P in my S&W 442.

I've got an old 60s steel S&W 49 which is not rated for +P. My local gun shop has indicated for SD carry purposes, the +P would be fine for the limited (if any) SD firing, just don't fire many through it for practice. I typically shoot standard 38 in this gun for practice. What do you guys think about carrying this particular gun with +P for SD?

    Snubbie Loads

    .357 Magnum:

Black Hills .357 Magnum 125 Grain JHP
    Remington 125 Grain SJHP
Federal .357 Magnum 125 Grain JHP

    38 Special:

Speer Gold Dot 135 Grain JHP

Those are my "snubbie" loads for various guns. If it says 357 on it, it get loaded with 357 ammo. If it says 38 SPL on it, I load it with the Speer load listed above.

For limited(or no)use the Hornady should be fine. My S&W Model 36, no dash isn't rated for +P either, but +P wasn't made back when I gun was.
I have tested some hot loads and some old Norma ammo and no problems. The Norma was some pretty spicy stuff to shoot, and I limited it to 10 rounds with no ill effects.
I haven't heard much that I like about the Hornady as far as penetration & expansion, and haven't found any locally to try.
Some of the older steel J frames are a lot stronger than S&W gives them credit for, but they do so to CYA

Short barrel gold dots in the 5-shot.

    Hydro-shocks in the 7 - shot.

Hornandy Critical Defense in the other.

Thought I'ld give them all a try... LOL.
