    .380 ammo?????? Which one??

What type of ammo do you perfer in your .380 for self-defense? I have read on other threads that the FMJ flat nose is best all around. I have Gold Dot in mine now but wanted your thoughts.

I subscribe to the flat nose FMJ school of thought with guns from .25 ACP to .380 ACP. The bullet absolutely has to get in there to do any good.

I've read so many reviews on defensive .380 ammo I'm confused. The brands that pop up frequently are Gold Dot, CorBon, Federal and Hornady. For me it doesn't matter much because .380 ammo in my area is almost obsolete.

Currently I have FMJ just because that is all that I could find, for 30 bucks for 50 rounds. I suppose 7 rounds of that would probably do the trick, I know I wouldnt want to get shot with anything comming out of a .380.

I just bought some Buffalo Bore 100gr Hard Lead Flat Point. They look and sound impressive (1150fps from a PPK, I think). Other than that, I carry FMJ flat point 95gr.

Stick with any Premium HP from a major producer.........Federal, Speer, Winchester, Remington. Find the load that functions BEST in your gun and stick with it.

Go get your preferred ammos, then shoot and see what they all do. Same day at the range.

Right now I am going for a JHP 88 grain Remington, a cheap ammo, just because I can shoot it in a much tighter group in my current carry gun. The hydra and speers are in my dresser drawer for now.

In .380 I prefer regular ball ammo. The FMJ round will not over penetrate in this caliber, so go with ball. Ball is less expensive. Try different brands and find one that works. Run 200 or so rounds thru with that ammo, and if it works, is accurate for you, carry that.

Hornady Critical Defense is what I carry in my P380. I've shot numerous rounds into water jugs that result in the same great expansion every time.

The FBI protocol is for a minimum of 12" penetration, with 15" preferred. Your bullets may need to penetrate hands and arms (they will likely be outstretched toward you in an attack) before even getting to the torso. Then there is heavy winter clothing, and obesity, and angled shots...you get the idea.

I used to alternate FMJ and Hornady Critical Defense. But, the more I though about it, I decided to go all FMJ in .380. Preferably a FP, if you can find any!

Living in Texas heavy clothes in winter is not much of a problem.

I just carry JHP all the time, my second choice would be WWB FMJ flat points in my P3AT.

I was at the range today shooting my LCP with RN factory Mag Tech ammo. When I picked up my member card a staff employee showed me the Gold Dot 380 that just arrived. SOLD! I finally located some quality personal defense 380 ammo.
