9mm vs 40 cal Winchester Ranger Bonded

Anyone check out the comparison tool on Winchesters website?

It looks to me that the 9mm performs as good if not better than the 40 cal through Denim and heavy cloth. It expands just as well and sometimes more and doesn't over penetrate where the 40 cal might. Is my assessment correct?

Also I am not saying that the 9mm is a better self defense round. It just looks like if you use Winchester Bonded Rangers, it may be. Keep in mind I am by far no expert in what is/isn't a good defense round.

Ammunition has come a long way since the .40 cal was developed.

Many members here feel quite comfortable carrying 9 mm with good SD loads for daily carry. I am one of them.

I still am sticking with my .40cal... I need the extra bang for when I'm up north... I only want to have to shoot wild dogs and coyotes once or twice, not 5+... I've done my own euro pellet testing (9MM) vs. 4ocal. I'm sticking with what Law Enforcement Uses. 40S&W! sorry... not convince to switch

I have a 9mm, a .40, and a .45. I feel comfortable behind all of them. I'd prefer the .40 or .45 just because they are bigger and have more capacity than my PM9 but I know the 9mm will get the job done with Speer +P 124gr.

I feel very comfortable with a 9mm, with good ammo, & would not trade up to a .40. If I had a .40, I wouldn't trade down to a 9mm, either.
There was a gunfight between police & a local murderer near here, 2 weeks ago. A cop took 1- 9mm round to the mouth, killing him, & police shot him 5-6 times thru the windows of his car. He survived & will be tried.

I'll stick with my 40 cal. A 9mm has been proven in combat for years, it even replaced the venerable .45 acp for our troops. Can't really say why, but I just feel more comfortable carrying a 40 cal for personal defense over a 9mm. It is as infentile as the 40 cal bullet is bigger than 9mm. I know...a 45 and 50 cal is bigger than a 40.

That being said, everyone has a personal preference, that's why they make so many different calibers in so many different weights.

I agree with the shot placement idea. A .50AE to the foot is better than a .380 to the heart/face.

I agree the switch from the 45 to 9mm was political. In this current time being politically correct is more important than effective results. :sheep:

What ever you feel comfortable with. If someone invaded my home and all I had next to me was my Mk II, I would be confident that it will get the job done. Of coarse a .22lr would be far from my first choice for defense if given a choice.

In their data the 9mm looks great. I have done my "backyard" testing with wet phonebooks, waterjugs, etc. I always find the 9mm to make a smaller hole with deeper penetration. The holes and damage into phonebooks look the same between .40 and .45apc.

I cary .40 most of the time and 9mm on occasion. I like using .40 because it is the same caliber that all local LEOs use. There are marginal differences between handgun calibers when compared to a long gun. With the right ammo, all are good.
