No expansion with 9x18 Silver Bear JHPs

Shooting Silver Bear 9x18 JHPs at milk jugs full of water showed that there is NO expansion going on. Did I get a bad lot (not likely) or is this stuff worthless as a self-defense round?

IMO, the velocity of 9mm (especially an 18) is barely enough to make an expansion in the first place. Save your money and go with FMJ rounds. That's what I do.

9x19 in quality HPs tend to expand reliably. Anything less (9x18 Makarov or 9x17 .380s) and I would agree on the FMJ. There may be some particular brands and types in which that may differ.

All of the premium .380 JHPs I've tried expand well and reliably. So also do good bullets from 38Spl and 45ACP. The velocity of the 9x18 exceeds all of those so expecting good expansion is reasonable.

Thanks, JerryM, that sheds some light on 9X18 performance.

i think you hit the nail on the head. not a premiun rounds = less than the desired results.

    expansion

I tried hydrashoks from my 380 on some 1 gal jugs filled with water and they expanded well enough to blow a large hole out the back of the jug.
I also did the same thing with my 9. Although the 9 blew out a slightly larger hole, I would verture a guess that the target (BG) would not know the difference.
A 380 FMJ did not blow out the back of the jug, but just drilled a hole thru.
I fully realize that this is an unscientific test, but its all I can do

Below 9 x 19 (9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum) I use FMJ for this reason. Expansion is not a substitute for penetration.

The .380 FMJ tested got 16-17", which is better than the FBI desired 15" penetration.

I had the same situation with the 95gr Silverbear HPs. I have had great expansion with Hornady XTP and Corbon Powrball.

As far as JHP vs FMJ, I say use JHP if it feeds 100%. The way I figure it if a 95gr JHP round doesn't expand then the fact that it is a JHP will not make it penetrate less than a similar weight FMJ so I'm not really losing anything by using JHP. .

In the FEG PA63, I found the only JHP ammo that feeds 100% is Silver Bear.

Do not know if it expanses or not?

The feedramp on the PA is a two-piece ramp made up of the frame then transitioning to the barrel. My PA had issues with JHP's until I smoothed that transition with a light file.

I also recommend the Corbon Powrball for 100% reliable feeding. The polymer ball inserted into the hp feeds as good or better than FMJ and packs a big punch. 1250fps 280ftlbs.

However, if the JHP expands as designed, it may not penetrate to the vitals in this caliber. The FBI protocol is minimum of 12" penetration, with 15" desired. This is for a good reason - an attackers arms will likely be outstretched towards you, either holding a weapon or instinctively trying to shield himself from your fire. Your bullet may well have to penetrate hands/arms before even getting to the torso.

Shot placement, penetration to the vitals. Expansion is a bonus, but not at the expense of penetration.
