    Ammo shortages???

so last week while I was at my local gun supply store (not a big box store) I inquired about 12ga double ought buckshot. The counter guy said "sorry we are all out, the National Guard came in a couple days ago and bought all 1100 cases because THEY were having trouble finding ammo to practice with"

needless to say I was little skeptical about this information?

anyone else hear of the local NG/military buying ammo from a private, local supplier?

seems a little strange to me, or was this guy busting my chops

I haven't heard about that around here, but I haven't bought any shotgun ammo lately. Next time I am out, I will definitely check though.

Very doubtfully, the military doesn't deal with real $, the receive training funds and it takes allot of paperwork for local purchases, unless they already have an approval for regular transactions an deal on a reoccurring basis, some small units do have local dealers they have approval for but the dealer would be prepared for large purchases.

Sounds like a good "story", but probably just that. A National Guard unit to come in and buy ammo locally, not to Military specs and thru the normal purchasing channels... would be a big hassle.

Actually, ammo is starting to come back around here. I've even bought some .380 recently, and the ammo shelves at Wally World have been pretty well stocked with different pistol ammo.

Kinda hard to believe. I think the store was trying to pull something over your eyes.

I don't find it hard to believe. Except for the part about the small gun store having 1100 cases in stock.

    1100 cases?
    All at once? Not likely.
A contract with a local supplier to be filled over time? Maybe.
If they're haveing as much trouble as everyone else, it seems plausible for a GOOD CO to make every effort to maximize his training ammo supply.

I would think that the military has suppliers that reload their brass for them. So why go to the hassle of going to the gun store?

look, if they actually bought 11000 case of buckshot they are planning on doing more than training.

I am seriously considering writing a letter to the owner of the company. It seemed pretty far fetched that the military would be buying ammo from a local distributor? I figure the military has a budget for things like this.

But what do I know ????

Over the last week, I've been checking multiple on-line ammo sites for availability of .22, 9mm, .40 and .45. Prices remain high and availability low with the possible exception of .40.

I'd say the ammo shortage is still a fact -- at least as far as this consumer is concerned.
