    Book size survey

First two full books I did were 8.5 x 11. Wonder if some other size might be preferred by you who might be inclined to read one. I'm considering 6 x 9 for the next one. Or you can suggest some other size. If you want to see some specfic format or layout, throw that out too. What's handiest or easiest or most readable for a print book for you? Keep in mind, quite a few pictures in all the text. Thank you for your input.

8.5 x 11 would make me feel like i was walking aorund w/ a school text book. 6x9 is a good size. especially with pictures. 5x8 would seem too small for pics.

i read a LOT. what are you writing?

    Depends on your publishing costs.

Yes. I wrote, edited, published two books and a booklet, available on Amazon now in print and Kindle formats. The books are 8.5 x 11. I'm thinking to make the next one smaller. That would be Volume 3 in the series.

Books are Vol. 1 and 2 of the series, "Gunfighting, and Other Thoughts about Doing Violence". Booklet is "Facing the Active Shooter: Guidelines for the Armed Citizen Defender."

Already in that format. Everything I do will be print and Kindle. Some people like print more, some not. I want to know what size print they prefer.

If most people are buying your books on Kindle that means the smaller size is acceptable to most people.

For paper: Personally, Gramps and I read while we are eating (gone are the days of romantic candle light dinners, sigh) and I read in bed before going to sleep. The large size is definitely not conducive to our particular use - or good for people who might read while in a car, cab, train........etc.

My suggestion is to go to a size that is close to most paperback books that are on the market.

That makes sense, ShooterGranny. I plan to do Vol 1 over to get better picture quality in it and so have the opportunity to revise print size. There's another reason related to ISBNs that I have to run a smaller version of Vol 2 out in a little while as well. So methinks I'll go to a smaller print size all around now. Thank you.

I read an average of 3 books a week.

    I prefer the 6x9.

I suppose that for carrying-around purposes only, 6x9 for me is fine.

But I'm a fan of the larger formats. A bit more 'heft' that's easier to hold, a bit larger print (typically). Compare to the puny mass-market "photocopied" jobs many folks do. The ~8x11 format in a quality book is about as far from that as one can get, while still being fairly portable. Works for me, though I can understand why many don't want the added bulk at any price.
