I tested 5 different 9mm JHP at the range

I just got back from the range , I tested 5 different 9mm JHP to see what the best would be for my everyday carry for my gun and spare mag,

test Gun was my Ruger SR9 with 4-1/8 inch barrel at 2 feet (boy did i get soaked!) I used 5 water jugs lined up for each bullet at a private range with a very high dirt hill for backstop so safety was my biggest concern.

1st bullet test -147 gr Speer Gold dot JHP- blew up the 1st and 2nd jugs stopped in the 4th jug almost exited the 4th jug into the 5th jug! Expansion was beautiful , a nice even flower shaped mushroom.

2nd bullet test- 147 gr Federal Hydra-shok personal defense-blew up the 1st jug ,stopped in the 3rd jug - expansion was very poor it barely opened up.

3rd bullet test-115 gr Hornady Critical Defense FTX JHP-wow it blew up the first jug in half , blew up the 2nd jug stopped in the 3rd jug, expansion was very good the red plastic tip was in the 3rd jug. Impressive bullet.

4th bullet test -124 gr Hornady TAP XTP JHP- blew up the 1st jug stopped in the 3rd jug , expansion was same as the CD .

5th bullet test- 115 gr Remington JHP (not express)- blew up the first jug stopped int he 3rd jug , expansion was .60 of an inch - not bad for a cheap bullet!

I decided to carry the Hornady CD in my gun and the Speer Gold dot in my spare mag, i was impress with those two more then the other bullets.

I carry the Critical Defense in my Taurus PT709 (9mm) and 442 (38+P). I just bought some Speer Gold Dot .357 Magnum for my Ruger SP101. Thanks for the tests and information!!!! Very helpful.

Whatever the answer to these basic questions, the tests are a basic indicator between those cartridges of the ability to penetrate and expand. Thanks!

    Questions:

    1. What was the diameter of the jugs? So, what was the distance the bullets had to travel to get through N number of jugs?

    2. How do you know that a bullet almost exited a jug of water, versus merely just squeaked into that jug? Based on where it landed at the bottom?

Thanks for the info. I was kind of surprised the Federal Hydrashoks did not do so well. Interesting. Going to look into the CD rounds for my Glock 9mm's!

Violence of explostion in water is due to the higher velocity in the lighter bullets. Temporary wound cavity from pistol calibers is typically thought of to not be all that important...at the lower pistol energies << less than rifle energy. I wouldn't base your decision on the violence of a plastic jug explosion. Go to brassfetcher and look at some ballistic geletin tests or look up elsewhere for better test medium results.

Just curious - why carry one type of JHP in your weapon and another type of JHP in your spare mag?
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

    To be cool...or indecisive...

Hornady CD does not meet FBI spec, nor does it have a track record of effectiveness.

I'd sooner carry Federal C9BPLE, which has been killing people since the days before fire when large lizards walked the earth than go with an untested ammo which neither meets an objective standard for police use or has a sufficient anecdotal record of working.

4th jug had big bump on the other end looked like it almost punctured.

    Interesting.

Me, if I was looking at the same results...I'd be carrying the 147 Gold Dot exclusively, based on it's penetration.

Blowing up the first jug means nothing, in my book.
