If I could find a 1911 that weighs less than a Kimber I would buy it. I carry a Kimber Ultra Raptor II at 25 oz. empty this is hard to beat. Kimbers shoot great, very crisp trigger, accurate even with a 3" barrel, easy on the eyes too!

I'd recommend checking out Springfield and also STI. Sig makes 1911s now too.

Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail (CBOB) meets the Kimber size criteria of the OP but far exceeds the quality of any Kimber.

All three of my Kimbers were pathetically bad. ONE could be made to run right.

This is not baseball, but I gave Kimber three strikes, and they are out.

I only owned one Springfield, but it was 100% reliable.

I had good luck with full-sized, 5" barreled, Colts.

My 1911 days are in hibernation; I have one Les Baer left. It has been 100% reliable.

I've had great results with my Kimber Ultra Carry II. I've now got about 650 rounds through it with *one* FTF while using the Kimber mag. It's been 100% when using the Wilson mag.

My vote is for the Kimber, but any of the suggestions here are spot on.

I carry the Rock Island Armory Compact everyday. It has a 3 1/2 inch barrel. Very concealable. Read all the forums about RIA's and you'll learn they are very well liked pistols. Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service.

The original Colt Combat Commander would be my recommendation.

I have three Kimbers and all of them have been great. Plus a Sig P238 for a Bug.

I NEED to tell you about the support I got from Springfield
    when I bought a EMP 9mm.
It would not feed very well and the sun store guys said to fire more rounds thru it to "break it in" .
I called Springfield service dept. and their service lady that I talked to say that the gun was a "defensive carry gun" and should work fine stright out of the box and to send it back for them to fix.
She emailed me a Fedex label and told me if the gun store tried to make me pay for anything to take it to Fedex or call her back.

They DID fix it and give me a list of things they did to it.

Because of the service I got from them I would say give them a long hard look before you spend your money a Kimber.

I love the 4" barrel just about the right length for a nice CC gun while keeping it reliable. Id look at(closer to your range) the Citadel or RIA's they are not "fancy" 1911's but they work great are reliable and feed hollowpoint ammo well they are around the $450-550 mark. Going up a bit you get into Springfield and Kimbers they are nice also just depends on what you want to spend..you can get the same RELIABILITY in a $450-550 RIA in a 4" as you can in a $900 Kimber in a 4" but the Kimber will be a "nicer" gun with more bells and whistles.

I know my Springfield GI (5") doesn't meet the criteria but it has been 100% reliable right out of the box. The price was right too and I feel any Springfield would be a better choice than a Kimber.

I'll throw my two cents in for my second post. I own two Dan Wesson's and they're beautifully built 1911's. My EDC is a DW CBOB in .45 auto and I love it's slim form factor. The weight is pretty easy to deal with for a SS gun and it' as accurate as can be.

I have a Kimber Pro TLE and just traded a standard Pro Carry. Both had some feeding issues. I put Wolff High Power recoil springs in both and never had an issue after that. 100% reliable since. Kimbers are fine......
