    Bear Bangers

Just finished reading a Nelson DeMille book entitled "Wild Fire" in which the good guys eventually got the upper hand by using something called a "bear banger" (can be shot from a relatively small pen-type pistol). Any experiences/comments on these? Possible defensive use? Availability? Cost? Internet access?

A pistol in a pen? I've seen those, IIRC they are an "AOW" needing an ATF tax stamp.

    Don't think they're very practical.

    Two problems with bear bangers:

    They can start forest fires

Inexperianced users can shoot them over a bear causing the bear to run towards you, not pleasent guess how I know this.......

If you can't carry a gun, then bearspray and bangers make a good combo. use the bangers to scare off a curious bear and keep the spray for an attack.

I'd just get the bear bangers mixed up with my epi pen. Would the bear bangers keep my throat from closing shut?

Wait, all these are all old pen flares, I've got like 10 of these sitting in a hole at home. They were standard army issue quite a few years ago.

Reminds me of an old blank pistol I purchased at a gun show many years ago. It had a threaded insert for holding little extras (smoke, flare, and big-bangers). Basically it relied on the blank to launch and activate the effect.

"The firing-pin strikes a .22 calibre blank round in the base of the cartridge, which propels the "banger" roughly 30 metres (35 yards), at which point it explodes.

The bangers compare in loudness to the report of a firecracker shell fired from a 12-gauge shotgun"

I guess the plan is to hope that the bear dies of a heart-attack?

I have used them successfully on bears, often a bear will check you out before deciding whether to make contact or not. the .22cal blank propels the banger about a 100' or so before it goes off. Most times this startles the bear and causes it to take off. However in some parts of my province a "bang" to the grizzlys means a gut pile and free lunch and will attract them. I have thought about putting a banger on my shotgun as a non-lethal deterrent, but will likely go with rubber slugs.

You could always tip toe up behind the bear and set off an M80

The biggest issue with bangers and bearspray I have found is air travel, I need to use commerical air travel to get around and they won't let me carry these items, they will however let me carry a shotgun and ammo.
