Nope,,,,money well spent. I have a 637 and wish I had Crimson traces on mine. Also, never let no one call it a mouse gun, bug, or whatever. Lasers, speed strip or two and some good ammo and you're a contender.

Good decision from what I have heard.

I'm on my 82nd orbit around the sun and it has become a little difficult for me to rack the slide on my 1911. The 638 seemed like a good bedside and carry choice. I found that I can still hold a decent group at 10 yards with it.

    Cool

    Welcome to the forum Redscho.

You made an excellent choice with the 638.

My wife took mine as her EDC so I am in the market for another one.

Practice with Winchester white box and carry Winchester 38+P PDX. Good Luck. A fine choice.

My first, and most carried snubbie, was and is a 638. Great choice!

Just brought an S&W 638-3 home.
Good choice. I opted for the 438. I bought the Hogue Bantam grip for mine but the S&W wooden service grips suit me better.

May I please ask why you consider the 638 to be better than the 642? (I'm new to J-Frame revolvers, so please be gentle.)

I'm looking for a snubbie and have a couple questions about the 638.

Is the DA trigger the same as the 642/442?

Does the shroud ever have issues with dust getting inside?

I just purchased the new S&W Bodyguard with lazer site.It comes in 38spl only but it can handle p plus ,plus and you factor
in the light weight shourded hammer it feels like 357 or 44spl when I am using lighter loads.Remember that pager pal holster
well I a guy with a bit of a gut witch I working on losing ,I wear it at 3 :o'clock no problem.I still want a 44 mag revolver.I don' knut the rest of you but I am finding revolvers more expensive than semi-auto pistols. My first pistol was $300 and I paid hundred too much!

The 638 has a shrouded but accessible hammer if you want to cock the gun for single action work.

Speaking for the 438, the trigger is typical of new S&W J Frame revolvers. Dust and lint collection in the shroud isn't a problem under normal carry conditions. Inspect it and blow out any lint or brush it out with a shaving brush after pocket carry.
