    S&W 642 ammo

    Hi All
I decided on a S&W 642. I was wondering what ammo is recommended?

I was looking at Remington UMC 125gr Flat Nose for practice and Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135gr. +P for carry

    Thanks
    Joe

I use whatever is cheap for target. For carry I use Hornady Critical Defense 110 gr FTX. I've got the S&W 442.

'Just about any .38 special round. I've been chewing thru a big can of Georgia Arms 'Cowboy (re)loads' at the range, and save the Speer +P 135 gr. GDHP for special occasions.

Go with Speer Gold Dot 38+P 135gr GRHP. They are made and designed to be shot out of a 2" barrel.

Good luck to you. The Airweight is a nice lightweight revolver. And it is snappy. Due to the light weight and the short barrel, I would be comparing higher velocity loads. They leave the barrel faster and will have noticeably less recoil. A +P 110 GR to +P 125 GR will give you the penetration better than a slower heavy load.

Get your check book out if you intend to practice with any +P. All of it is running $1.00+ per round when you can find it. You might need to set you sights lower. Right now we have very little standard JHP. You may need to use atandard 158 GR FMJ range ammo. It is not what you will shoot for self defense but it is far less expensive and usually available. I think shooting 50-100 round two or 3 times a week is going to make you much more comfortable with the Airweight than 500 rounds once a month.

    + 1

    If you can find it.

I do think +P 110 GR is about right for the 642.

Great gun....you'll be very pleased with it. I shoot (like others have said) anything that is cheaper for target practice.

Oh, and as for ammo, shoot anything for practice. For carry:

    1. Remington (softest lead compared to Winchester and Federal) 158gr. LSWCHP +P. This is the old "FBI load". Great standby.

    2. Speer Gold Dot 135gr. +P HP. SHORT BARREL! The "Short Barrel" version is clearly marked on the box and are sometimes hard to find in stores. The Short Barrel version is optimized (basically faster burning propellant) for short barrels like the 1 7/8 inch barrels.

If you are worried about recoil and accuracy, I had a wilson combat triger job done on mine and it increased my accuracy 10 fold.

So the stainless would be a better choice?
