I clean (field strip) my guns after every range session. I really don't have a set schedule for DETAIL stripping, which is taking one down to its smallest parts. I'll detail strip a brand new gun (after making sure it runs right) just to check it out, learn how to do it and make SURE I can successfully get everything back together. After being essentially raped for a very simple fix by a gunsmith years and years ago, I vowed NEVER to rely on a gunsmith to replace a broken part (not talking about custom work here). After those initial detail strips, I "may" take one all the way down occasionally, but that's usually because I'm really bored or something. They don't need to be detail stripped that often and I'm sure doing it too much causes a lot of damage/wear that is just unnecessary. Now, if I have a problem with something, then sure... It will come apart to see what's going on...

How long was it out of your possession and what kind of gun was it? Any rust or other problems from not cleaning it for so long?

I shoot everyday, more than once a day often. I clean every couple weeks, unless I forget. If I am putting something away for a while, then it gets a good cleaning for certain.

Ditto for me......but I also keep telling myself to clean and inspect my carry piece at least every few weeks and I seem to never get there...so I am remiss on that aspect and need to make some changes.

I have guns I've never detail stripped.

But I clean them like the O.P. after every time.

I guess I could go either way on this one. Depends on how literal you mean "every time". Most of the times, yes, I field strip and clean after every shoot. Especially antiques or safe queens, since who knows when they'll see the light of day again. But for service weapons, I may have missed a time or two.

I answered No because it depends on the piece. If it's a carry piece, then yes, every time, but if it's a range piece, I may go a few hundred rounds between cleanings. If it's a weapon I'm just breaking in (and not in carry rotation), then no. It must go through it's minimum of 300+ rounds of FMJ + set of SD carry ammo (without failure) before it gets cleaned and added to the rotation.

When I'm feeling a bit lazy, I merely field strip them for cleaning. More often, I go further than that.

Yes...take care of your tools and they will take care of you....it only takes minutes to fieldstrip, clean/wipedown, re-assemble.

Yes, after every time they are used, and once a month if they are not.
