    Taurus 85 not +p?

I saw an older Taurus 85SS in a pawn shop today. The side of the barrel was etched .38 special. No mention of +p.

To help with the age classification - there was a large screw straddling the side plate and frame on the right side just in front of the hammer and the front of the underlug was concave rather than convex. The grips were wood with the bottom sorta squared off. Looked sorta like Colt grips, ya know?

Did Taurus make 85s in a non +p caliber?

    TIA!

I have a steel 85CH that I bought in 1996; the book specifically states no +p. A couple of years later, they were +p rated. My new 85 from 2008 is +p rated by the manual, but the barrell doesn't state it.

Go to Taurus' web site and enter your gun's S/N; the exact model designation and year of manufacture will come up.

I bought my first M85 in 1992, and although the manual advised against high-pressure loads and reloads, Taurus advertising at the time started harping the gun's ability to handle +P ammo. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it. I have thousands of rounds thru that first M85, several hundred of which were +P, with no ill effects.

    The alloy-framed 'Ultra-Lite' 851 (M85 variant) I bought in '03 is specifically +P rated.

Well... I have an older model 85 bought in 1985. Runs +P's just fine. I could run 115gr. +P+ without a problem.
