Had a couple 1911s, went through the Glocks in 45acp, and I've settled on a SIG P220 SAO for now, and likely have it forever. I honestly don't know what to tell you with that price range, and I really haven't been searching lately, but Springfield Armory might ring a bell, or maybe a RIA (Rock Island Armory). If a new price on something that looks interesting to you throws you off, look for used or refurbished IMO. Get out to the next gun show in your area and find out what's what.

At that price, I don't know of many new 1911s. There may be a Springfield or Colt 1911, though.
There are a lot of polymers like S&W M&P, XD Compact 45....

XD 45c since you didn't want Glock. Otherwise in that price a Glock 30sf is IMO the winner hands down.

If you want a cheap 1911, get the Springfield GI. Otherwise maybe a Springfield XD or a Glock in the caliber you prefer would probably be in your price range.

I have a XD40sc as well and it's sweeeeeet. Very acurate for a short barrel and a smooth shooter. It's my first (and only) 40 caliber and I really like it.
Have you considered a revolver? Everyone should have a snub. The Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum is a great carry piece and a fun shooter. The S&W 442/642 are great .38 snubs as well.
Make a list of your needs and try to find something that meets those needs (features you want), fits your hands / eye, your carry preference, etc. There's so much out there, you're bound to find something that works for you. Good luck.
