Bring out the Flame Throwers!!
This might just cause a big stink but:
Why is it when a Glock is not liked, it is crucified but when a 1911 is not liked, it is(how do you say) swept under the rug?!
I know there are hard cores for each side. Glocksters that drink that tasty koolaid everyday and the .45 acp nuts that no other caliber will satisfy there thirst!
I'm just wondering......

Could it be maybe out of respect for the 1911? The 1911 is kinda like the old veteran. It has seen things and been places no other hand gun has been. Originated in the 1890s it has seen action in all major wars since then. When I hear "1911" I think of my grandfathers service pistol when the person may actually be talking about a shiney new Kimber.

I found this picture on a m1911 facebook fanpage that I'm a fan of and I think it sums up your question quite nicely!

This is where you're mistaken. Its not the caliber. Is the trigger! Crisp, clean, single action. Single stack. Its the fit in your hand, the way it makes you feel looking down the end of it. Its sex appeal in steel. Its function without compromise!
Its sorta the same idea as classic Detroit muscle. Its American, its simple, yet perfected. It's not all wheel drive, antilock brakes, and "it thinks for you" driving... yet its everything you like about what a car should be.

Exactly, every time I think I should have bought a glock or a sig as my first (and currently only) pistol I just go a pull it out of the holster for a moment and feel it in my hands. All the fear and anxiety just washes away in that moment.
It's like hopping into a 1964 Mustang instead of buying that sleek new 2010 Mustang; it just has an old breed style to it without all the bells and whistles and it just works same as the 1911. That's the best way I can sum it up as I love driving almost as much as I love shooting...almost
Haha, YFZ stealth edited his post after I quoted it, but used the same general metaphor.

If you don't already have one... don't get a 1911. It will ruin any other gun for you.

I might have to skip that advice with all the love thats being tossed its way. Never know(and dont flame me fellow Glocksters), I might just come to love my very own 1911.

You won't regret it, if anything you'll regret you didn't get one sooner!
And here's a funny little picture from that same facebook fanpage:

I have two Springfield XDs (pretty much Glock clones, just better for my shooting stance) and just bought a Kimber Pro CDP II. Let me say that since buying the Kimber, it has been my EDC. It's more concealable than my double stack, even the subcompact 9mm! And it's purdy and shoots like a dream. The only downside is 8+1.
Why does the 1911 get so much love? Because the design is classic and is still one of the best in the world.

I'm for world peace...buy one from each of the pistol 'families,' and enjoy.
It doesn't have to be an issue of 'either/or'...i.e. the false dilemma fallacy.
