    Advice On First Carry Gun

I just completed my CHL course today & I'm looking into my different options for my concealed carry gun. I currently have a XD .45 Compact & love it but it's a little to bulky for me.

I was looking at some of the Kimber 1911's but I have read some bad things about them. I also like the Colt Defender too but don't know much about 1911's. I want something that is small, light & easy to carry. Caliber size isn't that important to me. I really don't like Glocks though. Had a 9mm & hated it. Shot some of my friends & really didn't care for them.

So what are some of the most popular concealed carry guns out there???

    Thanks For Any Advice!!!

If you're looking for something light, it's not going to be a 1911. They are slim though. Are you only sticking to .45ACP guns?

Toker is correct: 1911's aren't generally small or light.

Handguns chambered in .45ACP are generally going to be heavier than their 9mm and .40S&W counterparts.

Since you have an XD and like it, I'd start with the XD9 and XD40 subcompacts. I'd then try the M&P9 and M&P40 compacts. Then you could move on to the Kahr P9/P40 and PM9/PM40, etc. These are all good handguns.

It doesn't have to be a .45ACP. I have never carried a gun before in a holster so I don't know what is more important between weight & size. I would think something that is slimmer would be better but I don't know. My XD .45ACP Compact feels like it's to big & bulky to carry & be comfortable.

M&P 9 compact from Smith and Wesson gets my vote. I have a full size M&P40, my father the M&P 9 compact, same as my uncle. Everyone who shoots this firearms, have only positive feed back. The gun fits into your hand, instead of your hand having to fit to the gun.

My buddy has a M&P 357sig Compact & it does feel good in my hand. I have never shot it though. I'll have to look into the 9mm.

My next carry gun is going to be a Sig P239 SAS. Sig also has some other models that are nice. Go handle them and decide.

Relatively small, light & thin. The Kahr K9 is a nice carry gun that is easy to shoot well. The P9 is lighter but I don't care for the poly Kahrs.

    Look at SIG (www.sigarms.com), P228 (9mm only), P229(9mm, .40. .357SIG), P239 (9mm, .40. .357SIG)

Or Kahr (Kahr Arms | Maker of high quality handguns in USA)...

You want a .45 caliber? Just pick up a Glock-36 and the grip will amaze you. Want smaller? The Glock-26 will give you 9mm capability with a dependable firearm that is very easy to conceal.

Wow - if you shoot your friends, what do you do to your enemies?

You might like the PM9 unless you really want a .45. In .45 Taurus makes a couple of small guns - I am sure that statement will draw comments. I have had good luck with 2 Taurus products but your results could vary.

May I first recommend reading this article: Service Pistol Duty and Self-Defense Loads - M4Carbine.net Forums

Considering it's what you hit that's more important (shot placement) and most current defensive ammo performs at a similar level, it's how a weapon works for you that is most important.

My recommendation would be a S&W M&P in the compact configuration as it's light, small, accurate, soft on recoil, etc.. I personally prefer 9mm, but the caliber is up to you.
