Just came from Wal-mart and was comparing ammo prices 50 round boxes, 9mm FMJ $9.47, 40 S&W FMJ $13.97, .45 ACP Ball $23.95, there was'nt any .380, however Gaunder Mtn. had .380 Blazer Brass FMJ for $19.95.
.380 is 100% more expense than 9mm to shot.
.40 S&W is 45% more expense than 9mm to shot.
.45 ACP is 250% more expense than 9mm to shot.
I just bought my first 9mm in twenty years a Kahr PM9, I am going to trade off my Glock 23 for another 9mm of some type. If the PM9 works for pocket carry, the Ruger LCP .380 will be traded off too.
I always thought a 45 ACP would be my next gun but ammo prices keep me from getting one.
I am sure the difference in defense ammo is about the same between calibers.

I concur. IMO the 9mm is a fine, economical platform but I also have a 380, 38 spl and a 40. I probably wouldn't get a 45. You're right, the defense ammo will be more and relatively higher between the calibers.
One of the reasons I switched to the 9mm about 4 years ago before ammo went skyhigh. These days I shoot 4-5 times as much 9mm as .45 and I sold my last .40 a year ago. I shoot a lot more .22 these days too.

That's one of the reasons why I went with 9MM instead of the .45 I was all set to buy.I checked ammo prices, and at that time,a hundred round box of .45 WWB was $10 more than the same ammo in 9MM.
I still want to get that .45 one day....
Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?
I have to admit that I am pretty spoiled. I don't pay for ammo. My dad reloads and is happy to provide all that I can shoot. If I DID have to pay for ammo 9mm would be that much more attractive (I already carry a 9mm).

I have three .45's and I just bought my first 9mm.
Yeah, the .45 is expensive.

The ammo prices for FMJ, around my neck of the woods, aren't as dramatic.
9mm goes between $10 and $13 per 50
.40 goes for about $13
.45 goes for about $15-$17
So the 9 is definitely cheaper, but I regularly buy the others as well. I look at ammo purchases as investments. You wouldn't think twice about dumping at least $50 on dinner, maybe throw in a movie for another $25, and your money is gone.
It's interesting what people will and will not spend money on.

keep the glock 23 and get the lone wolf 9mm conversion barrel for the glock 23. then all you need are some glock 19 mags. now you got a 9mm glock. that's all you got to change, the barrel and mags.

Congrats on the PM9, it is a very nice carry pistol!

Looks like you need to get a reloader... I would never trade/sell a 40S&W for a 9mm... never ever ever.. no matter how much ammo goes up in price. I find the 40S&W rounds everywhere.. 9mm is becoming less and less on the shelf.

If you find yourself in a fair fight your tactics stink.
Im looking to purchase that very gun in the near future. My Glock 26 is my work horse for sure. But unless my pockets grow twice as big, I cant pocket carry the thing and thats my only option for carry for work. And since its getting kinda expensive to feed the snubbie, she's gonna have to chill in lock up while the other kids get to come and play outside.
