    Recommend a 1911 that feeds JHP's well

I have a Colt Defender. I love it and will probably never part with it, but it doesn't get along with hollowpoints. With hardball, it'll feed anything. But since JHP's are my preferred carry ammo, I've pretty much been restricted to polymers.

So can any of you recommend a Commander-sized 1911 that feeds JHP's well?

Why don't you just get the Colt fixed?

Actually....I was told by a local gunsmith a couple of years ago that the slide was out of spec. He discovered this while replacing the extractor.

I may have to contact Colt and see what they can do.

What kind of JHPs have you tried? What kind of magazines? Actually, most modern 1911-types gobble up most JHP ammo quite well these days. What kind of malfunctions are you getting? Has any work been done on the feed ramp, and if so, is the ramp chewed-up? If the anodizing on the ramp has been cut through with a ramp job, JHP ammo will dig into the soft aluminum and gouge it every time a round feeds.

One of the three worst 1911s I ever worked on was a Defender, and it may have been the worst. It was dimensionally completely out of whack, with pin holes drilled at angles, the mag catch hole too low in the frame, and the feed ramp cut at the wrong angle. I got it working, after replacing several internal parts and pulling out a lot of hair, so the fellow could sell it in good conscience.

That would probably be a good idea.

I've tried various JHP's at different times. I specifically remember Remington UMC's (which I like) and Winchester white box (which I don't).

I must say, though, that it did better with JHP's the last time I shot it. Maybe I did a better clean-n-oil that time. The mags are Wilson Combat.

Springer, I would try some different JHPs. Get some that are as round as you can find. I have loaded the Winchester (not WWB but their new black boxed ones) and they feed great.

I would also call Colt and see what they will do with your firearm.

Did your smith say how the slide is out of spec? And again, what kind of jams are taking place?

Frankly none of my 1911s have JHP issues (range from a vintage Colt to an inexpensive Armscor model). My two newest are Dan Wessons which have been absolutely flawless.

FWIW, my 2 Kimbers (full size) have been flawless and my Bro-in-laws Kimber Ultra Carry II is the same. Any ammo, any place, any time.

He didn't specify what he meant by "out of spec." Originally, it was stovepiping and that's what led to the extractor being replaced. After that, it would feed FMJ again but not JHP. As silly as it sounds, I don't remember what the failures were after the extractor was swapped. I plan on taking it to the range on Friday, so I can give more details then (or hopefully NOT!).

I have a variety and all work fine:
McCormick Shooting Star 8 round magazines
    Act-Novak 8 round magazines (SARCO RPM122)
    DW/CheckMate SS 8 round magazines
    MegGar 8 round magazines

Thanks Bald! Nice collection. To the OP...I've only had one bad combo of JHP ammo with my one and only Dan Wesson CBOB. My point being that some guns just don't like certain ammo...have you tried different ammo? The checkmate mags sometimes don't feed the first round, of 8, when using Speer Gold Dot. Everything else out of my Wilson 47d works great. Any good 1911 should feed hollow points. I like my CBOB...now that I'm using Wilson mags. The new VBOB is sweet...have you looked at that? Commander sized and purdy too!
