? walking the dogs in snakeville

the rattlers are plentyful in southern NM,so what are a few choices for an easy carry * I cover several different trails throughout the week on my daily dog(s) walking routine while crossing paths with a couple of few folks doing there thing * I'm certainly not wanting to carry a cutoff shotgun or a very long blade knife * Since i'm not familar enough with gun options the "Judge" is the only one that comes to mind ......

Do you have a snub .38? Get some snake shot for it. CCI makes the most commonly carried at gun stores.

Believe it or not a 22 with shot shells does a great job. You can cut a snake in half and he will still bite and squirm forever it seems, but something about all that tiny shot to the head apparently does something to the nervous system. They pretty much stop dead in their tracks with little movement or coiling. I carry a D-100 High Standard derringer with enclosed trigger. If you don't want to be within 8 to 10 feet you can go with a longer barrel or bigger caliber.

Don't forget, you can also get a Rattlesnake Vaccine for your dogs. Some folks around here do. If you among them as much as you say and you care for your dogs, it's a thought.

.22LR snake shot in a revolver....I've never tried it on a snake. I have fired it, but the only snake shot I have found has been the kind that the round is crimped closed. My experience with those is that the empty shells typically get stuck in the cylinder.

.38 snake shot has a blue (see through) sort of cap.

I'm saving up for a Bond Arms Snakeslayer derringer in .410/45. Only two shots, but even interesting as a BUG for my 9 MM.

Almost any little .22 (semi-auto, dbl, or SA) would do the trick. So would a good walking stick/staff.

+1 on the walking stick - just push them off the trail.

Maybe a silly question, but does snake shot negatively affect the rifling in the barrel of a pistol?

figure out what caliber/style of revolver you want and then buy the snake shot for it--great way to figure out an excuse for a new .357 or .44 or a "Judge"

Yep CCI makes the same blue plastic shot cup stuff in 22. Only thing is you need a revolver, derringer, or single shot type weapon. It doesn't have enough pressure to cycle most semi autos like a ruger mark II or similar pistol.

    8-10 feet? Go around.

Why kill 'em, they're just doing what they do best... being snakes.
