Probably a good idea. Aside from the risk of theft, there's the fact that a 'truck gun' is likely to get knocked around a bit. For both of those reasons, I'd hesitate to go with a higher-dollar gun. You might want to take a look at a .357 EAA Windicator. A 4" is pretty versatile - good for SD, varmints, plinking, etc. They're about $260 brand new, and are a pretty good gun.

I am not planning on always keeping it in the car. I am still a student and still go to a school. Guns aren't allowed on campus. I do travel a lot however and wish to have a handgun for the occasional trip. A gun that I could carry later wouldn't be too bad of a thing.

get a judge! With the close confines of a vehicle its the best choice IMO.

A nice 5-shot 357(think..SP101)should do the trick for the aforementioned reasons. It is also easy enough to tuck in your waistband(with a good IWB holster) when you leave the truck. Good Luck!

I'll modify my previous response. If you cannot carry on your person until 18(or is it 21?)....buy a shotgun to keep behind the seat of your truck and wait on the handgun until you can carry it on your person. Then refer to my previous post! Good Luck!

    .38 Special/.357

There is a fabulous looking S+W Model 64-5 (4 inch) with a bobbed hammer for about $300 in a local pawn shop. Myrtle Beach is a long haul, but that is the direction I would take. I have looked at it twice and if it weren't for our upcoming anniversary I would own it right now.

A Model 19 in .357 gives you alot of options.

I've seen several in my neck of the woods in your price range.

unless you're attacked by an invading army or zombies a cheap 38 will do the job. and it won't leave you deaf from firing it off inside a truck

I would go with a CZ82, low cost high quality.

Well, yes it will, actually - at least temporarily.

I once shot a .38 out my car window at a snake near the end of my driveway. Had a finger in one ear, and my shoulder hunched up on the other as well as I could. It still rung my chimes pretty hard. It's pretty amazing what the confines of a car can do to the sound of a gunshot. I will NOT shoot a gun inside a car again, unless it's a dire emergency!

    Jim

I'll second the Ruger P95 9mm suggestion. 15 round capacity and you can get one brand new for $299. I have heard virtually nothing about them being anything other than absolutely reliable and built like tanks.

Won't break the bank nor will it break your heart if broken or stolen.

On another note, I don't leave weapons in my vehicle if I can help it. I DO NOT want them stolen. The monetary loss is bad, but I don't want it on my conscience that one or more of my guns is on the street potentially committing crimes or worse. Even with a safe, if the entire vehicle is stolen, it will not take them long to open the safe and have your firearm. Heck, it's possible that a safe could increase a crook's desire to steal the whole vehicle out of curiosity of what's in the safe.

I'm not a big fan of leaving guns in cars. They're a great source for BGs to get their inventory.

Unless you live out in the country, of course. The rules are different there.

For us city folk, guns are much better off being carried.

in certain states like mine, you can purchase a pistol when you're 18 from a private individual, just not an FFL establishment (gunshop). it's nonsense, but it is the law.
